[Request/Idea] Plugin based chatbox

A better idea would be having one in vanilla but oh well.

I'm sure someone could figure out a way of doing this in a plugin, maybe you could also make it server based too (The host decides whether the chatbox is activated or not).

Someone needs to make a thread of 'lost' plugins. I downloaded DPM for one of the ones it had that wasn't anywhere else...

I have an old copy of lorgan's plugin loader with all of its old plugins, including mini chat, which may be along the lines of what he's looking for. If you guys want them I could post the resources and plugin folder.

If he's alright with it or doesn't have his own copy to post (the old plugin loader link appears to be dead), I'd be willing to post it.

Please don't distribute other peoples' plugins without explicit permission.

If he's alright with it ..., I'd be willing to post it.

I'm not posting anything until I get his permission.

What would be useful would be gathering up all the old plugins which are already openly distributed (if you go through Lorgan's thread and the old mods which still work, there are actually quite a few) and putting them in a thread database as a plugin archive to complement the map archive. Would something like that be acceptable?

It's part of my job to make sure copyright's being respected. Don't give me crap for being like that.

Lorgan made fixes to certain plugins in his own thread, most of them are outdated, don't meet the standards for plugin threads here in this board, have conflicts with updates, are irrelevant due to feature changes, etc--, and on top of that the old plugins thread is old and chaotic. Making an archive of post links is a horrible idea for several reasons, including those, and on top of that you can't assume that plugins are redistributable just because they were "openly distributed". That's not how rights work. They only let /lorgan/ distribute it, and his plugin mod wasn't "openly distributed". You have to assume people can modify stuff and share plugins in private because of their very nature, but a mass listing is another thing entirely. Hey guys, artists distribute their music openly for free on youtube, that means you can make a list of songs and easy ways to rip them! Yeah, right. It's not that bad, but it's a similar concept.

Good and true, copyright's a issue. I (continue to) respect that.

Why has this never been an issue with the maps section, though? We have a map archive and seem to have no issue with redistributing maps.

Any map on a server is downloaded to clients without that map maker's permission. Map archive just bridges the gap to make shit a bit more convenient.

Quality and compatibility of individual maps or plugins is not an argument against archiving.

Maps are automatically redistributed by nature
Plugins aren't

Of course plugins are distributed differently. Difference of distribution, however, doesn't account for us not caring about map sharing; we've accepted it as an exception for both redistributing and collecting the necessary links to centralize. I feel plugins deserve a similar exception and archive.

I don't think being able to gather and share plugins like maps is really "another thing entirely". If you changed the word plugin to map in your copyright post, it seems clear how arbitrary the distinction is.

Lorgan made fixes to certain maps in his own thread, most of them are outdated, don't meet the standards for map threads here in this board, have conflicts with updates, are irrelevant due to feature changes, etc--, and on top of that the old map thread is old and chaotic. Making an archive of post links is a horrible idea for several reasons, including those, and on top of that you can't assume that maps are redistributable just because they were "openly distributed". No, they don't deserve similar exception. Plugins are end-user pieces of code, maps are by nature intended to be mass distributed. It is not an arbitrary distinction, and it is firm, it's not a point for debate. If you continue trying to argue this I'm going to ask the CMs to strike you because putting up with your backseat moderation everywhere is obnoxious.

If lorgan's plugin is open-source Gardicolo has the right to distribute it, or at least link to it.

this isn't about lorgan's chat plugin, he started talking about the entirety of the oldschool lorgan's plugin package

No I'm not, thank you. I repeat: I'm not going to post his plugins without permission.

What I started talking about is the concept of archiving the plugins scattered throughout the forum and its mods that otherwise wouldn't get seen or used. Little plugins, like Lorgan's pyro radar, pointing out and reminding you to extinguish burning players, or his map rotation randomizer, buried somewhere around page 22 of his plugin thread, both which would be nice for people to be able to use but are each on their own unlikely to receive their own thread. The map archive, but for plugins, more or less.
