Just an idea for the wallmasks...

Why not make the color-specific doors embedded in the wallmask?

The wall mask is just black and white, but how about red for a red door, and blue for a blue door? Then, all you have to do is color in where you want the doors, and the map is one step closer to completion!

I've been talking with cspotcode about the new garrison builder he is working on and with the way he is going to detect wallmask this MIGHT be possible.

I'll ask him later tonight when he's online.

Fine idea. Would probably make it easier for people new to map making, in my opinion.
A color coded system would be great.

No I still haven't got a hold of him yet unfortunately. I'll tell you when I have news.

The MS Paint default red, silly.
The darker red and darker blue could be intel doors. That'll make it easy for everyone.
Spawn zones could be yellow, Frags could be green.
Overlap is simple: red functions as the team door. There aren't layers in MS Paint.

The MS Paint default red, silly.

Are we talking <XP MSPaint or Vista FagPaint? How much darker, half or noticeably colored on certain screens with badly set unmodifiable contrast? What about CPs and team spawn points and intels and bullet walls and player walls? So you can't put a spawn zone over a spawn point or a kill zone on a teamdoor?

Respectively. Not argumentative, just getting some flesh on this idea. Without interjecting my own conceited opinions.

Ideally, the editor would let you select which colors to use for what, so it wouldn't matter how you make the image.

Overlap presents a problem.  Internally, the map files could support many different walkmasks, one each for the different areas of the map: spawn areas, nobuild zones, team walls, bullet walls, platforms, water(?!), etc.  Since the walkmask is only 2 colors, it's very small and adding more wouldn't make the map files much bigger.

Or mappers could have the option of placing rectangular entities.  These entities wouldn't have a set size; they'd be rectangular regions created in the editor.  This would be great for nobuild zones and spawn rooms.  However, while the editor could very feasibly support creating these entities, implementing them in-game might be difficult.  The editor could, however, compile them into a walkmask-type structure by drawing them onto a big black and white image.

Dang, I just can't figure out how to convey this idea right...

And that in-editor color chooser sounds like a good idea, but the idea here is to reduce the need for an editor at all, and be able to make a map COMPLETELY in ms paint. This just brings the idea one step closer to fruition.

I'm reasonably sure that the walkmask decompiler in gg2 is able to be converted for this idea.

Making a map completely in MSPaint seems like a silly idea to me.  What about placing objects like the intel, setting up waypoints for the payload cart, or configuring multiple spawn rooms that are used depending on how many control points you've captured?  An editor will be needed for these things.

Yeah, I agree. But, if you're on the run and want to make one fast, it should definitely be an option.
Also, why not just draw in the intel? A certain colored dot of red and blue could be used to determine where the upper left corner of the intel is.
