due to the new 2.1.3 release, there are several matchups which have changed, mostly for the better as far as the runner is concerned. The detonator will need updating as the matchup is now much easier, but the same strategies against rocketman and constructor will work favourably.

Self-Introduction:
The only introduction I need is my gun.

(click to show/hide)

Class Introduction/Focus of Guide:
Frankly, the runner is one of the most powerful classes in the game. He is easily the most versatile class and is able to play offensively and defensively on the fly. He has incredible mobility, allowing him to take faster routes, take shortcuts, and maneuver effectively around opposition. A good runner must be respected, because he can literally dominate an entire team if supported and left unchecked.

First, let me get this straight: if the only thing you can do with runner is to run towards the intel like a brainless fool, you are a fucking terrible runner and must read this guide immediately.

Bad runners are willing to simply grab the intel on suicide missions. They are content to take the path of least resistance, run to the intel with no regard for safety, and be of little help to the team. Even decent players do not really go the extra mile. The problem is that he is an obvious class to play. Few work on the intricacies of their gameplay, and are unwilling to push the limits of what a runner can do.

The guide herein is an attempt to explore these limits in a thorough manner. Because my other guide is rather abstract and imprecise, this guide will aim to be practical and concise. The goal is to make you a better runner and player.

Advantages/Disadvantages:

+ 48 Damage on pointblanks
+ Best mobility in the game
+ Best intel carrier in the game
+ Strong defensive/offensive presence
+ Good spy checker
+ Great range
+ Counts as 2 players on a control point
- 100 HP
- Very difficult to play well
- Certain very difficult matchups

Scattergun :
6x8 bullets Ė 48 damage maximum

(Note: From herein I will refer to a max damage scattergun shot as a PB, standing for pointblanks)

Damage breakdowns on classes:
5 shots Ė Heavy
200 > 152 > 104 > 56 > 8 > dead
Total bullets = 25

4 shots Ė Soldier
175 > 127 > 79 > 31 > dead
Total bullets = 22

3 shots Ė Every other class
140 > 92 > 44 > dead
120 > 72 > 24 > dead
100 > 52 > 4 > dead
Total bullets = 15
Total bullets = 13

Realistically, the Medic is going to take 4 or even 5 shots because of his health regeneration. If it takes more than 5 shots, it means youíre missing too many shots to kill the medic efficiently and should probably retreat since the needles have probably done a fair amount of damage. Q/C are also going to take 4 or 5 shots because of how small they are and how tricky it is to PB them.

Some of these damage breakpoints are noteworthy. The 4th shot on a Heavy will make him vulnerable to a single sniper shot. The 2nd shot on a three shot class will make him vulnerable to a revolver, sniper, or explosion. The runner is also good at finishing off weakened opponents. In particular, the runner/spy 3rd shot breakpoints mean they will die to the slightest scratch. They are relatively easy classes to PB, so this breakpoint happens pretty often.

The Runner has a very decent damage per second. With good accuracy, your close range damage approaches the damage of the other attacking classes. Obviously, from further away your damage becomes worse because the shots spread out, but itís still pretty decent.

A point of interest is the face that runner is one of the few classes whose bullets originate in the middle of his body no matter what direction he shoots. Technically, the shot actually starts pretty much behind his sprite. He shares this trait with the constructor, infiltrator, and sniper. This makes the runner a good close range class in a way firebug is not; he is able to shoot people while standing inside of their sprite. This comes especially in handy in certain class matchups.

Terrain:

The runner is good at exploiting the terrain to his own ends. He gets no real positional advantage like a detonator or engineer, but instead can use it to trick his enemy. Rather than be philosophical and explain the concept (which is rather simple to understand), Iíll give the main gist and good tactics instead.

Advanced Technique: Spinjump

Spinjumping is a way of increasing the height of your jump when pressed against a wall. This is a mostly universal tactic, but the runner benefits from it the most. He has a double jump, but more than that, many of the maps were designed so that certain areas would barely be out of reach for the runner. With spinjumping, you can turn an almost accessible route into one for the runner.

The principle and execution are easy to understand. The principle lies in the collision code and the area defining the runner. You do it by turning left and right quickly while jumping and running against the wall. For slim ledges, jump up to the ledge then press against it and start spinning.

I will list all the known spinjumps (to me and RebelINS, anyways) on all the standard maps. There are some simple spinjumps, hard spinjumps, prohibitively difficult spinjumps, and impossible if you are not host spinjumps. Iíll label the following spinjumps accordingly as:

Easy Mode - :z5:
Normal Mode - :z4:
Hard Mode - :z3:
Runner Must Die Mode - :z7:

That concludes this relatively short section. It's a great tool to have and you should use spinjumps whenever you can.

How to Deal With Classes:

This guide will be following a particular format. I find many players like to discuss how to handle bad players, but never talk about handling a good player. Ironically, bad players donít really require discussion, but players are stuck when it comes to good players. Therefore, this guide will only deal with handling a good player. The same strategy will work against a bad player anyways, but strategies for bad players donít work against good players. Also, there will be the distinction of Mid Range and Close Range, because the runner must handle those two ranges in a different manner. I will rate who has an advantage in the fight at both ranges.

When it comes to the ď- - With HealerĒ sections, those will cover how to kill or harass the patientís healer. Those sections will usually rate the difficulty of killing a healer with that medibuddy, unless the medibuddy is killable.

Format:
(Big Advantage, Small Advantage, Even, Small Disadvantage, Big Disadvantage)

since i know most people won't actually read the guide since it will be too long im wondering if there is some way i can make the guide more readable without sacrificing length or detail as i personally feel the length and detail are warranted.

i was thinking some way to separate the theory and application from each other.

self-introduction is up too so someone can spam about it and keep my guide on everyone's radars.

Just put unfunny jokes and put pictures up then at the end of each one put a tl;dr version so people will read at least some from the big part, then the tl;dr will tell them the rest.

Spoliers will keep everything on one page, but colorful titles and pictures keep the masses entertained.
