Migration to Launchpad, PLEASE READ.
« on: July 30, 2009, 02:44:37 pm »

Using a forum for bug reports may have been a good idea in the beginning, but with 15 pages of threads in here already, it's probably a good idea to get more organised and use a proper bug tracking system. To that end I have registered GG2 at Launchpad, a project hosting site for free software which (among tons of other stuff) already hosts the Garrison Builder.

To test this new system, please report new bugs at https://bugs.launchpad.net/gg2 instead of or in addition to posting here. If you report a bug both here and on Launchpad, please provide a link to your forum thread in the Launchpad bug report and mark your thread by adding [LP] to the beginning of the title. Please give it a try if you have a bug, so we can work out any problems. Reply to this thread if you have any questions.

At the moment, this is still an experiment since only Bacon has given me feedback about (and approved) the idea so far, but if all goes well the plan is to move all bugs that still matter to Launchpad and close down this subforum completely. Later, we might try moving Feature Requests over there as well, but I'm not sure if there are as many benefits in that.

So what are the benefits?
Developers will be able to see at a glance which bugs are still open, which ones are already being worked on and so on. This saves time and makes it easier to get working. As a result, players will probably get their bugs fixed more quickly, and old bugs won't be drowned below new reports and forgotten once they leave the first pages.

Thanks for your attention.  :smiley16:

We should set up a system so that you can't just report a bug, but you have to get it clarified with an admin.
People will report the rocketman's health being drained on Hooker Shootout and how some people can see spies all of the time.

Maybe you also should make the Link bigger, for the nearly blind people  :hehe:.
(no seriously, it did take me a half minute to find it.)

Everyone is able to report a bug, the sorting and checking starts afterwards. Irrelevant/useless bugs will simply get their status set to "Invalid".

Don't agree with this guys, they'll take out the Feature Requests too and we won't be able to contribute to each others ideas in a proper area.

:hehe:

And why don't mods just erase some of the useless, non explaining threads on bug report.

EXACTLY. Because they don't have the time. And they can't elect a pooper-scooper mod.

I elect you as that pooper-scooper mod, even though I'm not a mod

If it weren't possible to discuss ideas on LP, I'd hardly consider that it could replace the Feature Requests forum. Besides, I said myself in the original post that I'm not convinced that it would be a good idea. So please let's focus on the bug reports part first.

And why don't mods just erase some of the useless, non explaining threads on bug report.

And how do you propose to mark bug status, importance, release schedule, developer assignment and duplicates in the forum? Of course it's all possible, but probably a lot more work than using a tool that was made for the purpose.

Was just thinking about erasing bug report topics that are jokes, but since you mentioned it, forget my idea, too much work.

I'm going to start a first round of bugfixing next week to start the preparations for v2.2. And as an extra incentive to try out the new system, I'm going to treat the bugs reported at Launchpad with priority. Of course I can't promise to fix everything, but I'll give every serious report a look.
