Map Editing within Garrison Builder?
« on: January 19, 2009, 03:51:05 pm »

Wouldn't it be convenient if you could edit the collision map/background within Garrison Builder, perhaps as a side function? I always thought it annoying doing images outside of it and then having to upload it in, especially because of many image changing things that my map goes through in the process, such as resizing, which causes a layer of color around all of the black, forcing me to go through it all and change it back to 255 255 255 white. Esentially, all I'm asking for is an Image editor within Garrison Builder, perhaps with two views, one that would be what somebody playing would see (600% zoom), and a full map image. Custom zooms would be nice if possible.

Anything of the sort would be fairly cool, but again, I think there are more important things that need to be done (like getting custom maps completely working, and getting v2.0 out)

I have no disagreement. It earns an A+ grade as long as it's an official version that allows editing of both mapfiles with zoom/unzoom, has both vert and horiz teamdoors, and plans ahead for the next addition such as teleporters or elevators. But the current one is fine as is. And there are enough talented mapmakers already, and until they complain, it is a level zero importance problem.

If you are really that lazy that you are incapable of using Game Maker, then you should talk to CSpotCode about that.

An image editor is a very complex piece of software.  I could spend a lot of time attempting to make an image editor within the Garrison Builder, but it would be pathetic compared to the many, many wonderful image editors that already exist.

I would suggest that you use an image editor that supports layers.  Paint.Net is what I use.  It's free and has plenty of power.  Any editor will let you zoom.  And if it supports layers, then you can load the walkmask in one layer and the background in another, and resize or copy-paste both layers at once.

AcidLead mentioned that the editor should plan ahead for future additions.  Internally, the editor is built to easily support new entities, such as teleporters or horizontal team doors.  It takes a minute or two to add the button image, the in-map image, and a name for the new entity.  The real work is actually creating those new entities in the game itself.  As soon as the game supports something new, the editor can be quickly updated to let you use it.

Yup, S'truth.

I think I cocked it up, but from my attempt it seems easy to add stuff to it.

Oh. Then this is still truly a brilliant piece of software. BTW, do you mind if I ask how long it took to make?

I spent two weeks mucking about in C++, using the wrong libraries for the job. (I tried to use a game creation library for an editor.  I'm stupid sometimes)  Then I switched to GameMaker and threw it together in an afternoon.  Go figure.

So does that mean you'll release it any time soon to the public?
