[Client-Side] BubbleWheel
« on: April 06, 2018, 01:04:42 pm »

Do you like Overwatch's wheel menu for voice lines?
Do you find it hard to reach the "9" key while playing a serious round?

BubbleWheel

Special thanks to BassMakesPaste for the buildings plugin which gave me the idea and a base sprite to modify

Note: Your bubble binds will still work perfectly! However, due to compatibility reasons, it would be less annoying for you to use a version which doesn't actually create the BubbleMenu object

Mods like these should be added directly to the game.

As it turns out for some reason on this forum no idea is ever really original, so you can find posts from 2012 on the same topic, before Overwatch was realeased

Pressing the emoticon button brings up a wheel, that allows players to select emoticons by aiming in their general direction and pressing the emoticon button as well. (Or alternatively have players click/middle-click to select an emoticon, or have players hover their mouse, but both of those are difficult to use in combat)

This would allow more emoticons to be used beyond the current in-game list, like the ubercharge now! bubble ( :superburst: ) or advanced taunt/domination emoticons. A wheel would also be more ergonomic (so players wouldn't have to reach across the keyboard to  :z9: or   :x10:) and would not require the effort counting/analyzing the screen and searching the keyboard, since a simple look and flick of the wrist/swipe of the mouse would suffice.

Now I understand that many players are used to the classic method of emoticons, having adapted their fingers to the buttons, BUT, this could still be kept in this new system, since it doesn't change anything beyond introducing another method of control for selecting emoticons/changing the emoticon tab into a wheel. The numbered emoticon selection system doesn't even have to change. The number-emoticon system could exist within the emoticon wheel system, so that players who are sort of used to using emoticons while in combat woudln't be that bothered by the change, since players won't have to actually change their aim to pick an emoticon since players can still use numbers. The only real difference with an emoticon wheel to players who only use numbers, would be a visual change where the emoticons surround the character, rather than be displayed on the side.

Anyone else play KAG (King Arthur's Gold)? It's a 2d side scroller (sort of like Terraria) that uses an emoticon wheel.

So in Summary:
Emoticon/bubble wheel with mouse selection
more emoticons (also won't have to use the  :x10: or  :x20: to access the class-specific emoticon folder list, the wheel would be large enough to support both teams)
Can still support number-emoticon/bubble method

Might cause a slight obstruction in view, which could be supplemented by letting players disable the wheel display as an option in HUD
