I just realized
« on: April 17, 2016, 12:49:45 pm »

Iji did pretty much everything that Undertale did, just way before the fact. Good music made specifically for it, check. Pacifism or murder everything, check. Overdramatized final boss, check. Parts of the game that are hidden and/or injokes, check. Author appears all but in name as a character, check. Loosely connected to the author's earlier works, check. Sure, maybe Undertale's characters have visual variety, but Iji has the scrambler.

I'm still slow.

No tumblr tho
Well, that depends on your point of view. The entire game itself is a narrative on the dangers of Mob Rule when you really get into the grit of it, which is universal.

No I am saying what the main difference is
Homosexual couples and a narrative on pacifism in general count as "tumblr" in a lot of circles these days. Hell, you could spin something like LISA the Painful as a tumblr game these days.

You're gonna have to be more specific.

undertale is ruthlessly accessible and integrates gameplay and concept by having a gimmicky battle system. but the battle system is extremely intuitive, so it doesn't seem like a gimmick.

iji is ruthlessly inaccessible and that inaccessibility itself is the concept of the game

i prefer iji but undertale is basically designed for mimetic popularity

plus iji came out when the internet was smaller and weaker

I didn't know not liking something meant being edgy

You're gonna have to be more specific.
The obsession with gender fluidity and the copious amount of pointless discussion on its narrative
I mean, not saying UT has no story at all or no overarching morals, but it definitely isn't the War and Peace people are furiously beating their meat to

And it's not even about either two tropes, they've been around for a long time and there's definitely some very fun stories and games that use them - it's the fact that there's a collective of people latching on their identity to the title for no better reason than "it's popular now" that irks me, since most definitely didn't play either the game or the old ass demo from way back and are just passively repeating whatever junk their peers have

Also there's this

Which again wouldn't be so weird if it weren't for people taking this shit completely serious, the cringing factor I've seen with this title has only ever been reached by the old Sonic forums I used to download WADS from for Sonic Robo Blast 2

But look at me being an edgy contrarian armchair expert, if you feel like it

UT is fun, even though I think it's a bit too easy in some parts while others just take into account the fact that you'll definitely get hit the first time through, there's some of the characters' attacks that have barely any tell but luckily it's still a very easy thing

though lol so spuky resettin the games nevah seen that one

and I don't think inaccessibility is the key factor, anyone can watch other no-lifers play hard games from the comfort of their room, I think it's what you said later: there were much less people to follow your thing on the internet back then and/or it was lucky/unlucky enough to have remained niche within the niches

Asgore: was married and had a child. Clearly a trans gay.

Anyways I'm going to take this to offer my criticism of Undertale. It is a charming game that is really easy, but it's one of those games that are an "experience," and so it has borderline no replay value because it becomes a very annoying and tedious chore if you ever decide to play through it again. The writing is good but the biggest issue is the insistence of running jokes making a lot of characters and dialogue seem forced and unrelatable, and the inconsistency of tone. Also the overworld graphics are ugly it's painfully obvious that the creator couldn't figure out how to properly loop the music. Rent, no buy, please do not allow it to influence your daily speech and personality.

hey a thread to sperg about iji in cool

Pacifism or murder everything, check.
You can do stuff in between, too, dammit. Plus you get to watch poor Iji's mind snap in two if you go full kill everything and save no one unlike the 'you're not actually playing your character so deep whatever' shit Blundertale did and how she reacts to various things.

God I hate silent protagonists in story-heavy games. As Remar himself wrote in a tidbit on his site, ellipsis as character voice is like tragic past as backstory. Yawn.

Overdramatized final boss, check.
What do you mean by overdramatized?

This, too. I know there's the whole Toby 'Annoying Dog' 'Hack Fraud' 'Radiation' Fox thing, but who are you referring to in Iji? Her brother Dan?

No tumblr tho
If you search for Iji on tumblr 70% of the results are about some shitty indie band no one gives a fuck about.

I don't think Iji takes 4th wall into account tho
It does, but it doesn't really do the whole "HA HA THIS IS A GAME. FOURTH WALL. SO FUNNY" thing, more a comment or two regarding the posters and ribbons that could just as easily lean towards Iji's mental instability than the player himself going out of their way to find secrets. At least until you enable the Scrambler, anyway.

An experience is one way to put it. I couldn't picture playing it again, one playthrough was enough for me and I hated myself after slogging through the pacifist run, opposed to Iji where playing pacifist can be pretty fun due to the Reflector and generally requiring more thinking (especially towards the end with the constant weapon re-combining) than "run" or "talk until name turns yellow."

I'll be the first one to admit Iji is ugly as sin, but at least it's consistently ugly and carries its own stylization with it not unlike Another World/Out of This World (which Remar cited as a direct influence, if I remember right). Undertale looks like every generic RPG Maker/Game Maker tile based RPG mashed together with a bunch of zany characters to draw porn of/ship/claim they're transsexual/etc etc etc with no real style of its own.

If there's one thing I'll give Toby Fox credit for, he learned well from Andrew Hussie how to find a fanbase, appeal to them, and milk them for all they're fucking worth.

I think so.

In cahoots, they are. Hussie (or whoever was animating) put a really obvious, lame reference to UT in Homosuck's (terrible) ending.

a) its not only tumblr these people post b) they are a small minority of the overall fanbase (have you seen youtube videos? everyone loves that shit) and c) the fact that overactive queer people are projecting themselves onto the character is no fault of the game itself.

the op discussed similarities in gameplay and you used it as a soapbox to air your problems with queer fanbases claiming things for their own empowerment.

if you are purporting the game has some sort of MO to promote gender fluidity or that its "obssesed" with the idea, i'm going to have to call bullshit. one character being genderfluid (which is not stated, its just never discussed! with the intention of allowing you to project yourself onto the character) and having the ability to "date" both sexes (they're fucking monsters so who cares) does not equal "pandering" or "obsession." the game doesn't make any strides to call it to attention, the main character doesn't even fucking talk. if there was no promotional art and pokemon red was released today, you can fucking bet these sorts of people would call red "genderfluid." so if you are saying there is an "obsession" with genderfluidity by the FANS, yeah sure, except theres not... its a small group of tumblr fans.

like i've been saying, your arguments have turned total 4chan in which you would willing conflate a fanbase with the actual game. its weak as shit. its a mediocre game but a fanbase doesn't help or detract from it. i get that you are shocked! SHOCKED ! that these special snowflake gay queer faggots are being supported (read: pandering!!!!) by a developer to empower themselves with his work, but you're a shrinking minority in that regard yourself and it has no actual bearing on the topic itself.

tl;dr: game is mediocre, some of the fans are cringy, nothing actually wrong with any of it
