I guess hand-painting the graphics instead of making them pixel art is kind of cheating, though. At least as far as making a good looking map goes.

There is no cheating when it comes to personally made background graphics, as long as your not ripping  from another's

I'm with Poop on this one, having played a few rounds, it's hard on the eyes to see where the boundaries lie,
I'd suggest to darken the BG where players collide, and keep the passable lighter
The layout is great though
