Hanako’s Help Desk
A place of chess, pool, tile hopping and helplines.
My server is back from the dead! I can host again!
PLEASE READ: Mission (for everything except the jump rotation)
I want to bring quick games to players. Expect maps that discourage turtling and overly defensive play. I keep a low timer, this is non-negotiable. This timer will not raise past 7 minutes. This keeps the game short, and if one team utterly dominates another, the losing team can’t use engies to cause a stalemate and grind out the time. One last point, death matters, and I want the server to reflect that; I run longer respawn times than normal.
To Do:
- Check out the moba plugin. I know my machine can take it.
- Add some choice maps to the Jump Rotation.
- Turn mvm_Decoy into an a/dctf map.
- Create a rotation focused on gen, a/dcp and a/dctf.
Changelog
- August 1st, 2014: After a long hiatus, Hanako's Help Desk is back in action! Got a smite plugin. I'll use it as the first warning for rulebreakers. And Prime. Definitely gotta use it for Prime.
- June 20th, 2014: DSM is configured, now to test. 15 players works well, if spam is a problem, I'll reduce the cap. Comp map rotation done. Just ask for it.
- July 18th, 2014: Updated pug rotation with the new map pool (spelled right, I promise, Derp). Still down, hopefully my main machine comes back soon.
- June 29th, 2014: I've been getting complaints of lag, so player cap reduced to 12 (+host).
- June 28th, 2014: Connection too slow for DSM, going back to vanilla. Some maps dropped, I should update the map list in the thread.
- June 19th, 2014: Player limit bumped to 15 from 11. Grabbed DSM and the comp maps collection, expect them up in a few days. Bandwidth allowance increased by 10x, so expect shorter map downloads. Added to-do list.
- June 10th, 2014: Jump rotation - broke Icebreakers, zapped zenland and pulled porcupine. Updated red, it's winnable now! Grammar checked OP.
- June 8th, 2014: Added dkoth_kots, removed dkoth_atalia (never wanted dkoth_atalia in the CTF/KOTH rotation).

I got an F. Does this mean F for effort?Wait! Don’t go just yet! While my connection is quite bad, I’m on a modern desktop (not a laptop). The computer is able to handle gg2 very well, but sadly the network isn’t. While ping lag makes life difficult, please consider joining.

A Note about Map Rotations:
I’m flexible. If you want me to switch to a different rotation while the server’s up, I don’t mind changing it, that’s why I keep multiple rotations ready. Just ask for the CTF&Koth rotation, or the Jump rotation. All rotations except for Jump rotation contain maps from all game-modes, they’re just weighted toward their map-type.
Rotations are under construction, if you have suggestions for groupings, please let me know. I’m currently thinking CTF & Arena & A/D (both a/d CTF as maps come, and classic a/d), Koth & CP & dKoth, and TDM & gen & koth. The jump rotation will only have jump maps (rocket, sticky, runner, spinjump or sentry).
Server Frequency
This is not a 24/7 server because my connection is too slow to allow me to host for too long at a time. For a sense of perspective: I can’t even browse the web without massive lagspikes. Expect me to host at night (EST) when the load on my network is lighter. Whether or not I’ll go up depends on demand; if I go into the lobby and see servers are almost full, I’ll help pick up the slack. If there aren’t enough players for the servers, I’ll let others handle it because their connections are probably much better than mine. Consider the server a safety valve that reduces pressure when there are too many players.
Map suggestion guidelines
- Map suggestions should reward aggressive play. People shouldn't focus on not losing, they should try to win.
- I know dkoth matches are slower than most games, so I run the dkoth anti-stall plugin. Do not be afraid to suggest dkoth maps.
- Feel free to suggest a/d, the timer overflow plugin keeps games from dragging.
- Avoid maps heavy on platforming. I DO accept jump maps though, I just put them into their own rotation.
- I’m reluctant to remove a map from a rotation, mostly because games are so short. There will be frequent map changes as the game continues, and I need a respectable number of maps to avoid the short games from getting stale and repetitive.
Don’t worry if your map doesn’t meet all of these guidelines, I’m always up for trying out new maps.
Rules:
- Stay civil. I’m not asking for top hat and monocle manners, but I do ask you avoid open hostility. This means no racial, sexual, etc. slurs.
- Do not grief. The time limits are short, and the teams are small. Your teammates need every bit of help they can get. Exception: it’s legitimately funny to everyone in the server.
- I do not approve of aimbots or other hacks, and expect me to be helping people deal with it. If people complain, I will kick you.
- Help out the newbies. If newer players have questions and I’m not around to answer them, please answer. I don’t want to encourage people to ask questions only for them to get shot down when they do.
- Try to avoid sitting in spectator while the server is full (I won’t flip out on you for this one).
- It is considered ungentlemanly to ditch your team in an attempt to force an autobalance and then join the winning team.
One last thing,
I'm constantly helplining while hosting, so ask me stuff. Sometimes new players don't ask questions until someone else starts.
Alright folks, that’s enough from me. Post in the thread or send PM’s. I look forward to reading feedback.
