Possibility of using unauthorized server-sent plugins?
« on: February 26, 2014, 07:59:16 pm »

Last I checked, server-sent plugins were ones that are taken from a database of plugins, at ganggarrison.com/plugins. Is it possible to use ones that aren't on there?

no. theres a reason you cant. its simple, plugins sent by the server can be malicious so they need to go through an approval process first

Even if its made blatantly unbalanced so its more fun? Say I wanted to play with really fucked up rules with friends on a locked server.

There are also plenty of host sent plugins if you meant those, they can be used if the serverhost plops them in the Plugins folder

But if you're adamant about SSPs (and you have the patience and mindset to make one) then: http://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?topic=33509.msg1211298#msg1211298

you could set up your own database to put plugins in and then a client plugin for your friends so that their clients would download plugins from your db
if that would work, someone please clarify (i don't know a lot about gg2's codebase)

He'd have to edit the source to direct downloads to wherever he hosts

I think the game generates its own md5 hash checks for plugins

He could set up a side plugin downloader, where rather than changing the db from where plugins are downloaded he would add another downloader.
For private use there's no need for an MD5 hash.

yea, but your problem is getting that through the serversent plugin approval first. if the client lacks the plugin then it cant download and in order to get that plugin to the client you need a means of sending the plugin to the clients. on the other hand, telling the client to download the downloader plugin seperately kinda defeats the purpose of serversent plugins in the first place

they arent host sent. they are changes made to the host server, then resynced to the clients. the clients dont actually run any new code.

then use serversentdebug. just have your clients download the plugin manually and place it in the debug folder

They're his friends, so it's easier for him to have a bobtehnoobPluginDownloader.gml and give that to his friends and set up a database to load them from.
Though I agree, if he's going to go through that trouble he may as well just get them to put it into the debug folder.

Could you not just give the plugins to the people you want to have them, rather than circumventing the server-sent security?

i'm planning on doing just that, but how would i go about that?
where would i put it if i were to give it to the people directly?

I'm saying you should just use it like a normal plugin.
