How to host a WORKING server
« on: November 22, 2008, 05:13:58 am »

If you're having trouble port-forwarding, try this guide HERE

Guide V1.2.3
If you're not using a router, then forget about this thread.
If you don't know how to forward a port, this is for you!
(I'm not sure this method works or not but it works for me!)

1) Go to this site, here!
2) Pick your router, if your router isn't there just pick the closest one.
3) For convenience, pick Utorrent when you're shown a list of applications. (Utorrent not required)
4) Ignore everything until you see this: Utorrent's Port for incoming connections.
5) Input 8190 into the box. Follow the rest of the steps shown on the web.
6) Note: GG2 only uses TCP, the ip in your address bar should be your dynamic(external) ip.
7) If you're to name your "port", name it GG2 instead of Utor1.

*You have to do this every time you restart your PC/laptop/router (for some).*
+To check your static(internal) ip, simply go to Command Prompt and type ipconfig.
+To check your dynamic(external) ip, go to here

---If your server is still not working, then you will have to work on your firewall---
1) Go to your firewall.
2) Look for exceptions.
3) Look for Add Port.
4) Name: GG2, Port:8190, TCP
5) Done!

Note: 8190 is GG2's default hosting port, if you changed it, replace 8190 with your number.

How to check whether your server is working
1) Open up 2 GG2s.
2) Host with a GG2, while checking whether it appears in lobby with another GG2.

OMFG IT DOESN'T WORK!!1!11pssst... updated

I think you can only access your router if you are directly connected to it.
8) I think you have to do this every time you restart your PC / laptop.
And, it should last forever if it's a static IP address.  If not, you'll have to change the IP address in your router after each restart.

Go visit the speedtest.net topic and say this is still useless. More (especially fast) servers =  :wuv:

I figured out what I did wrong.

When I went to Wireless Network Connection.
I found my default gateway and My External IP.

Unfortunately, I cant port forward because I don't have the log in password to the firewall port forward settings.

There's a few issues I've come across.

1) Hosting a dedicated server is pretty damn CPU intensive, anyone like bacon or others notice this?  Running a server on an old 1.3 ghz thunderbird was fine and dandy then the moment 6 or 7 players joined instead of 4-5 the CPU hit 100% and the server was laggy to hell.
2) Canadians who use Shaw can't seem to host or play at all, it must be some kind of packet filtering or other voodoo but it's pretty odd.  Thanks god I don't use Shaw at home but a lot of people do.

If you have a wireless router: the network key isnt equal to the router password (that's a mistake I made).
