The HUD draw code is actually pretty easy to work with if you clean it up, but it's really messy normally.

At least for me when I started, the draw code naming standards (xoffset, sprite_index vs image_index, halign, etc) were some of the most confusing of the entire codebase, so I don't blame people for being a bit confused there, especially if they don't think of checking constant declarations in the create event for all the offsets and other magic numbers.
But yeah, it's not hard code to work with, just hard to get into.
