FAQ - Read before posting [updated on 19.07]
« on: June 30, 2013, 11:19:44 am »

Read the rules first!
FAQs are going to be updated as we get more questions.

Q: What are the Haxxy Awards?
A: It's a contest to see who can make the best stuff for fun.

Q: So how do I enter?
A: Create a topic with your entry in the correct section. That's it.

Q: Where do I submit videos?
A: 'Other' category. We'll make separate subcategory for them.

Q: Where do I submit update posters?
A: In "Art and Other".

Q: Where do I submit menu backgrounds?
A: In "Art and Other".

Q: Can I submit stuff I made some time ago?
A: Yes, but read the rules carefully.

Q: What are the prizes?
A: It's a secret for now, but this year, apart from in-game "items", there is a special prize in the "menu background" category. I think you can guess what it is.

Q: I won't win anyway, so why would I enter?
A: How do you know? Everyone has chances, there are no da Vincis here. You can always try the screenshot category or, if you don't feel like doing anything, enter the lottery.

Q: I don't know how to...
A: Your question has probably been answered multiple times before, there might even be some guides or tutorials. In category-specific rules there are links to ones related to it. Or try search function.

Q: Can I use stuff from Gang Garrison, like sprites or music?
A: As long as main idea is yours, yes. Making a video using them is fine, but throwing them together and saying it's your pixel art - not so much.

Q: What's with the subcategories? Will I have to state which one I want to enter in?
A: It's not necessary if you only submit one entry for a category, but we encourage you to come up with a subcategory your entry could qualify for anyway. If you want to submit more than one, each entry has to have a separate subcategory. More on this topic can be found in the general rules.

Q: How are the winners determined?
A: It's public voting. In the previous editions, people were sending me pms with their picks for each subcategory. This year I hope to introduce voting via polls, but we'll see how that works out.

Q: Is tracing allowed when creating pixel art?
A: As much as I don't support it, it is allowed within reason. Don't resize image, fix some colours and claim it's gg2 - make the characters look like the gg2 ones. Try to capture the characteristics that differ our characters from a certain other group of mercenaries.

Post your questions in this topic or, if it's something more, create a separate one.

Quote from: Rules
  • You can submit your entries until August 20th, but we may also give you some "overtime" after that, so it's not a final deadline.

Make it pixelated.

I tend to use the character portraits as a reference. Notice glasses lack any frames, soldier has no granades etc.
But it's just me, many people just go for pixelated tf2, which I really don't support.

Not sure what you mean here, but as said in the rules, teams can consist of up to 2 members with the exception of mods.

Have the Haxxy prize items already been determined? If not, could we suggest some? (We would, obviously, not find out if they were accepted until they're awarded, because they're secret and all)

did you know that spinning stars work like this???

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. execute_strings on fire off the shoulder of Overmars. I watched object-beams glitter in the dark near the room_goto_fix. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in...rain. Time to die.

It says that in every category's rules. Guess it's not clear enough, but oh well, it is written in the general rules.
But yes, teams up to 2 are allowed in every category.

I suppose that's fine. Make a separate thread for that, though.
I sorta have an idea for the prizes, but hey, maybe someone will propose something cooler.

You can always redraw it. Isn't really copying.
But yeah, I'll change it a little.

so is that about art or does it include pieces of geometry

because most of my maps are actually well covered-up frankensteins of other maps

or assets in general from stock maps or ones which were released with the intent of being reused by others (like agh's and some of taters's stuffs)
