Advised/Required Specs?
« on: March 24, 2013, 05:15:09 pm »

So I wanted to get into hosting recently, but I don't know if my PC can bring it. Mainly because everyone hates lag.

So what are the "required" specs for a good server, given it is in dedicated, gib and particle-less mode?

Note: I can't post my specs right now as I am not on my PC right now.

I'm no expert, but a non-shitty discrete graphics card and an intel core 2 duo or above (or equivalents) is probably enough to run a decent server. Lag issues also stem from your internet connection. Make sure you get decent speed/bandwidth. Finally, make sure you're not in Europe.

use speedtest.net and pingtest.net to test your internet, your connection is as important as system specs if not more so.

Less than 50ms ping (shown on both sites) and less than 5ms jitter (on pingtest.net) should be fine, but I'm no expert.

Bandwidth doesn't matter that much, but go to your gg2.ini and change "Total bandwidth limit for map downloads in bytes per second=" to 999999999 because its default is stupidly low. This just sends custom maps to other people faster.

- Low jitter is more important than low ping
- If you can't maintain 30FPS, do not host
Bullets: Changing the bandwidth to something so high is a really bad idea because then map downloading can choke out your whole connection

Maps are almost always under 50kb, wouldn't it take less than a second to send a map to 20 players on a typical 10Mb/s connection?
Unless you're hosting ctf_mandelbrot I don't see how raising the bandwidth limit could do any harm

Also Nova if you haven't seen this 20 times yet, turn off particles and gibs while hosting to make things easier for your computer.

computer seems fine

do a speedtest, if it comes out nicely, then we can really tell if you're good

or just host the server and we can see if it's smooth or laggy in person.

I also hung another "0" at the map-download bandwidth. Its not 99999999999999999-overkill and not 3.

EDIT: Will it lag way more if I choose to play too, with blood-only, mid-particles and sound?

Playing on your own server is somewhat frowned upon because you personally get 0 ping.

Playing on another just makes yours lag more.

It's a lose-lose situation.

Nobody gives a shit about hostadvantage, the difference between 0 and 31 ping is tiny compared to 31 and 245

100 kilobits per second is a typical cable upload speed
kilobits
that's around 15 kilobytes per second
so you could experience complete bandwidth choke for like two seconds if someone decides to download ctf_conflict_pro off your server, pretty jarring for players
