Is this language worth learning?
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:52:51 am »

I just had a peek at the source code for gg2, and WTF!
Did you like, make this language or is that the actual game maker language.

eek, it's nothing like I've ever used before, and I can use A LOT of programming languages.

EDIT: oops, don't think this is the right place to post but oh well

It's the actuall game maker language, called gml, if you have a good amount of coding experience it should be easy to learn.

The lack of consistent syntax is a bit of a curveball, but if you already program, it shouldn't be an issue.

The lack of consistent syntax is a developer issue, not a language one.

I never said it wasn't. I'd agree that it's both. GML's acceptance of inconsistent syntax is a quirk of the language which allows it to become a developer issue. Regardless of why the syntax changes, to a new programmer, it doesn't make it less of a curveball.

It's fairly similar to all C-based programming languages, so unless you've been working with Python and Ruby all your life it's nothing new. It's incredibly easy to get the hang of of you've actually programmed before, and if you haven't, fuck around with the weapons as a start, and modding the game should come easy to you.

If you have any questions or anything PM me. I haven't played the game in months, or modded it in months for that matter, but I know what I'm doing to some extent.

It seems so similar but with major differences to stuff I've used before. And it seems to have a LOT of unnecessaryality (That's not a work but you get the idea :P)

The language is incredibly easy to pick up. Do as you see fit. The language has a bunch of limitations but it's good for small projects.
