Add a free movement area entity.
« on: July 25, 2012, 06:40:35 pm »

let me give you an example:

------------ <-- limit to free movement:
:x13:         l the soldier inside the free movement area are can move freely to where he wants while in that area.
                l
l this can be used in space maps and in water.
------------
not so hard to code right? right?  =/

You always have free movement so that wouldn't make any sense. If you want to invert it then it would have to be a set amount, or you can just use moveboxes.

I think he's referring more to regular movement + free vertical movement + no gravity.

Nonono, he means a box that when in contact with, you can push up down, left, or right, and you'll move in that direction.

I'd support it, because it would allow mappers to add ladders, would allow for basic water, and would be fun to mess around with.

Answering your question, yes, it's possible. Yes, it's easy.

I like the idea, could make for some good maps

Could we have it so the mapmakers can decide how much downwards gravity the area has?

like, 0 and the player floats wherever he stops

1 and the player falls downward at normal speed if not pressing the up key

decimals in between and players still get pulled down but at a more gradual speed, allowing them to use the down key to plummet faster

would be good for water and shit

Aside from water I have no idea how you can strategically implement this into a map.

So maybe lower (set by mapmaker) gravity entity instead?

What I'm wondering about is vertical inertia, rather than gravity.

Aside from water I have no idea how you can strategically implement this into a map.
For strategic uses, any use I could see being used on a serious map:

Water. Ladders. Climbable vine and wire mesh walls. Replacing the need for wall nubs to climb a thin, vertical space (Think about the lower area on cp_dirtbowl's third stage).

For fun, or interesting map making:

Space maps. If you could combine them with moveboxes to yourself slow down or speed yourself up while moving through air, you could potentially make a surf map. Donkey kong country style ceiling grips. Rocket jump tool and GG2W tool.

Well, being able to move up freely like you would expect on a ladder is different from being in 'space' as you'd have vertical momentum. Either you 'stick' if you don't hold down a button, or you float.

That said, I would foresee difficulty for mappers to make these things noticeable from the background. Secondly, it would be difficult to create a entity shape that is small enough to act as a ladder as well as be used to cover large areas of the map.

Also, I feel like if we were to consider water we'd also have to consider a foreground because it could possibly be confusing.

Edit:
I must say, I feel like ladders should have been/must have been considered earlier. Seems rather important as far as 2d platformers go. But then again so are jump-through platforms which we still haven't figured out.
