Beside chat, a big ass sprite sheet could work for text. There's probably less than a hundred instances of text in the game anyway.

Team select, class screen, kill log, kill cam, main menu, credits, options menus, announcements, win and loss screens, and possibly some form of plugin language support are all I can think of. Anything else?

Well that'd actually require us to actually support languages. I'm not sure we've come up for a solution for that, as has been said. Sprites are a simple solution to UI text, something we could pump out easily in a near update.

Sprite fonts or whole sentences as sprites, because the last seems rather silly and would take longer translate then just having to type out the lines.

Not necessarily. Chinese has a massive amount of symbols and it's own typing system (you don't type letters, you type lines), all of which a tiny fraction is actually used for everyday speech and would suffice for all ingame stuff.
Also, drawing code for sprite fonts is a lot harder than a whole sentence.

Apart from that, yeah, sprite fonts would be better, or even direct unicode support via an extension or whatnot.

it'd be a lot easier if we just made a chinese guide on how to use the user interface, instead of trying to integrate all of these sprites
