Multi language support (Wishlist)
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:56:48 am »

There oftenly are people in irc with bad english. So there must be even more playing gg2, why not try to cater to a wider audience by making translations possible. This could be a step to get more people to play, maybe even more koreans if someone on the korean forum made a translation. Proposing this would be done with simple language files. It would need a bit of work though I understand, but it's not hard or difficult work. There could simply be a file selected holding arrays with translated strings, example:
Quote
English:
$lexicon['settings'] = 'settings';
$lexicon['Auto_destruct'] = 'Autogun destroyed';
Dutch, ( a different file)
$lexicon['settings'] = 'Instellingen';
$lexicon['Auto_destruct'] = 'Autogun vernietigt';
Then in the source all hardcoded strings would have to be replaced by the translation variable counterparts.

We tried doing this a while ago, and a few languages got done, until people noticed that grammar had to be thrown out of the window sometimes and also that non-ASCII characters are a pain (so no Korean).

How would grammar have to be trown out of the window, if you translate whole strings the grammar stays correct. I see that if you would do it to induvidual words it would cause trouble. A shame of the no korean though.

Edit: I found a similair thread in a different section http://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?topic=31816.0 those seem all for doing this

This has every ounce of my support. I think it will be usefull and will help promote a non-english speaking community.
However I can't translate any stuff.

As I can see, couple of people are Polish. For ex, Tarzan, Pieboy, [PL] Spadochroniarz. And I bet Polish translation would be helpful  :z6:

you guys are missing Bassie's concept, of grepping the hard coded source and replacing it with a variable counterpart

which is genius btw.

The variable replacement method is the best way to allow language support to grow. It's how they did the Minecraft translation project. They simply built the initial code and told ambitious translators to change each context sensitive string to match their language.

In two weeks they had over 50 different languages completely translated for, and any time a new country wants a translation, it's a 10 minute job for a fluent native speaker. Since we have about as much (if not less) text for translators to change, we could see the same success.

If (or when) we add language support, we better add Pirate.

Just to be safe.
