a seperate sprite takes higher resources for a larger change, which the purpose of can be done with smoke trails just as well.

we're not talking about huge puffs of smoke, I'm talking about a thin trail like you see on a plane or like you see in tf2

personally i'd still prefer a double jump sprite or possibly a double jump animation over smoke coming out of his feet since that doesnt take away his double jump is just another hop in the air with those ugly stretched legs

Aha, how's this for a reason to have a sprite instead of having just a smoke trail? People with particles turned off/low wouldn't be able to benefit from having a particle trail by itself, but they'd be able to see a sprite no matter what.

I'd like to see whether the scout dancing me is able to jump again or not, so I'd like a different sprite.
now this is a better argument for it

this still isn't the kind of thing I would love in vanilla though

Yes wareya, I'm saying you won't add a smoke puff for a low/no particle setting. Why? Because when a player sets their particles to off they mean off, not I want every particle off except this one. It would be an exception to the no particle rule, and likely an obvious one at that.
