I'm gonna go easymode and not change the images :P
I think I'm gonna place the numbers underneath them (where you placed the class selection numbers)

This is a good idea. I would suggest using dots rather than numbers. They're smaller, less noisy, but easier to parse (your eyes can slide right down the row of dots). We don't really care about numbers bigger than 4, and a bunch of dots is much more obnoxious than the number 9 by itself. And, of course, nobody would mix them up with the numbers used to select the class.

Or you could do what tf2 does and have a  small representation of the class. You'd just need to make the class select taller.

create controller object with an array of every player's root sprite index that updates and sorts alphabetically on CHANGE_CLASS or CHANGE_TEAM or PLAYER_JOIN or whatever that shit's called now

use array to draw character sprites at bottom of class select screen.

On tf2 it draws all the classes being used on your team at the bottom of the class select, use some sprites to do that (at least i think thats what he means)
