An Autogun Bug
« on: January 31, 2010, 06:55:03 am »

Before I post details, is this in the right section?

Moving on,

I was playing an Infiltrator, and I cloaked past enemy lines in ctf_waterway and got behind a constructor's autogun.
I was going to stab it once the constructor moved away, when this firebug started trying to flame the autogun.
The autogun was supposed to be unable to see me, yet it immediately started firing at ME, instead of the firebug.
I know I was closer to the autogun, but I was cloaked the whole time.

was the firebug on your team? if yes the latest update isthe problem, one part of it was that cloaked spies get hit now when the autogun fires your teammate behind you! :z6:

Is this the wrong section? You missed the "Bug Reports" Section.

http://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?board=9.0

To report a bug, go over here: http://bugs.launchpad.net/gg2

And to that "glitch": Nothing wrong went there. You were in front of the autogun when the pyro came over.

Hm, does the autogun actively target the spy in this scenario, or does the spy get hit because he's in the line of fire when the autogun is shooting the firebug?  If it's the former, I'd consider it a bug.

It would only be a bug if the setup on map is:

:x22:          :x5: :x28:

Otherwise it's a feature of the autogun trying to shoot the firebug but hitting what ever is in the way, seems sensible.

I believe that's what he's talking about.
It's happened to me before.
I was near on it, but it pointed at me instead of the other teammate coming along.

The setup on the map was like this.

The autogun turned around and started firing at me.

more like
 :x28:
 :x5:        :x22:

you thought you were left of it but you were close enough to be hit

it's like how a sniper laser comes out of their stomach, not their gun, hitting a spy if he happens to be in the exact same location as sniper

Actually, there was the animation of the autogun turning around and shooting at me.

I specifically remembered the turning of the autogun.

The engineer saw where the autogun was shooting at and tried to shoot at me but I ran off.

Then that's weird because I'm almost 100% sure they fixed that and I haven't seen it happen since they fixed it

As far as I remember the autogun logic works like this:

1. Decide who to target. First the closest non-cloaked enemy that can be fired at is selected, then it's checked whether the hit line intersects the hitbox of a cloaked spy. If that's the case the spy is targeted instead.

2. Check if the autogun faces the right way and turn the turret if neccessary, otherwise shoot at the target.

So, it's still possible that you just got in the way of the autogun by standing very close to it, even though the turret actively turned your way. It should disengage as soon as you are no longer in the way of its normal target (if you manage to move out of the way before it kills you of course). This implementation was a bit easier than simulating the autogun "accidentally" hitting a spy. You could call it a bug, but it's not too serious IMO. You might even use it to distract a sentry.
