I have no idea how many people will remember the last time HE was approaching, but this will take a little longer than back then.
No idea what I'm rambling on about? Here's it again in plain english:
I'll try to shift the forum to our new server today, but I want to make sure everything is smooth and we won't lose anything in the transition. To do that I need to close down the forum while I copy all the files and the database. Don't panic, everything should be back up within less than an hour.
I won't copy the entire website yet, but I'll update the forum link to point to the new forum. A result of this is that you'll have to log in again, so try to remember that weird password you put in at when you registered, you're going to need it (probably twice over the next days).
Warning: Technical details and long sentences follow.
The reasons why we don't just move the entire site and then make ganggarrison.com point to the new server is that a domain transfer (DNS update) can take about two days. During this time the domain name ganggarrison.com will send some people to the old server and some to the new one, so if we had only one of the servers running the forum some people would not be able to reach it for up to two days. On the other hand, if we continued running the forums on both servers some people would continue using the old one for up to two days without knowing and their posts would be lost.
Also, I want to test how well the new server handles the load and if I need to tweak anything before we complete the move and actually update the domain.
Update: As you probably noticed it actually worked this time. Enjoy the new server.

Everything will be kept. We'll also still have the old server around for a bit if something goes missing.
And some people opt to stay logged in by cookie. I was joking a bit, but it's possible to register and log in once and not type that password again.

As an admin, are you able to PM everybody in the forums at once? If you can, that might have more success getting them to retrieve their password/not panic etc.
I have mine stored in my pile of emails, sure, but some people delete emails

What does changing servers do for the forums exactly?

More bandwidth, MySQL support, etc. He hasn't done a DNS change so we kept everything.

I added a little something to the redirect script on ganggarrison.com so the the "old" foum links will redirect the correct topic/post on the new forum. This will become unneccessary of course once the domain is transferred, but I thought it makes things a little rounder in the meantime.

We already had downtime/maintainance, mang.

Yes, the downtime I was talking about is long over. There may still be some short interruptions though if I decide to change more things on the VPS, but if so those should last a minute at most. In fact I made a major change about how web pages are served from the VPS today and I don't think anyone really noticed the 15 seconds of downtime that caused :ninja:
