You may have noticed some changes around here. What happened? Where did all the forums and posts go?
Frankly, I don't think much of the content on the forums is still of interest to anyone, and I'm not even sure the forums as a venue for new discussions are that valuable anymore - The forums have seen maybe a post or two in a month, chatter has moved to our Discord, and unrelated gamedev projects may be better placed in more active communities like TIGForums, which is of course where we split off from back in the day.
However, I also don't want to just delete everything - there is a chance that someone is still relying on this as the main page for their project, for example, and maybe there are some old threads that are really still valuable to someone out there. Also, the haxxy reward system relies on the forum accounts of the reward winners, and I don't really want to break that.
I'm a bit conflicted about all of this myself. I consider forums a somewhat temporary medium - not as short-lived as a chat, but there is no expectation that it will stick around forever. And I think that it's good to eventually reflect this expectation and retire these old posts which we may not always be proud of anymore. On the other hand, this place is a part of my and our past, and I'm sad at the thought of removing all the posts that reflect the life of this community over such a long time.
If time and effort were no obstacle, I'd love to keep all the high-quality content from the old days around in a read-only archive, but there are 850,000 posts on here, so it is just not feasible to sort through everything. However, if you have some specific things you would really like to save, please comment below and I'll see what I can do.
So consider this your chance to weigh in. In particular, I'd like to get some feedback on the following questions:
- Do you think we should keep the forums running for GG2 related discussions?
- Do you think we should also have a board or two for things vaquely related to GG2, like Game Maker development?
- Is there any content on the old forums that you think should be saved? Please be as specific as possible.

As a disclosure, MedO originally posted this thread. I am a fool and accidentally buttclicked the Remove Thread button on my phone and we are here.

seems like no one's gonna reply but honestly the only two things that are semi important and that would be nice to keep were the plugins and sprites posts, i still went on them just to check on old stuff that might be cool to try out
Please keep at least the plugins. I've found the plugin page to be very useful, but the posts with the plugins on them won't exist so the plugins page will have no plugins. I really want to be able to use plugins, and archiving the posts listed on the plugin page would be nice.
Detached from sentimentality, if the forums have to go at least keep one or two boards open in case someone somewhere finds us and isn't immediately scared off by forums being permanently gone.
Edit: having just this board and having it read only would be fine for the minimum. As suggested maybe keep another for people's projects, whatever they may be.
No particular requests, just wanted to say thanks for keeping the servers up for so long, and cheers to everyone who hung around on the forums and on IRC over the years. Some fun times were had.

Specific to GG2? No, not an entire dedicated forum. What I'd personally like is if we condensed any discussion to Faucet-related projects, including GG2, FaucetNetworking, and any projects that people want to pick up in the future and put under the group's general banner. That's your call personally though, maybe see if some of the folks in the discord server wanna act on that offer if you're willing. We can just have most of that kind of discussion there, but giving them a place where they can make concrete posts tracking their progress and answering any questions pertaining to them would be nice.

For the most part? Not really. A lot of files related to personal projects were either deleted by the creators or hosted on websites that ended up purging them over time. And the discussions? Well, a lot of us were young teens when this website was active, and I think that says enough. There are so many missteps in regards to our conduct and how the boards were managed in general that I don't see the value in most of it.
Maybe we could grab Redo's annual 4th of july posts and archive them though. America is the strongest country in the entire planet, perhaps the solar system. We need to acknowledge this fact with America's Strongest Warrior's dedication.
Some threads it'd be useful to keep:
- All the "official" guides, I remember at least Hosting, UPnP, Mapping
- GG2 Release Checklist
- Every thread that's linked to by https://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/clientplugins/ (https://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/clientplugins/) and https://www.ganggarrison.com/plugins/ (https://www.ganggarrison.com/plugins/) , otherwise we lose all plugins
- The Server-sent and Client-side plugins FAQ, otherwise the links to those two threads get broken
Probably also:
- DSM Mod by Derpduck thread
- Perhaps the Melodytchi's Manor thread? I'm not sure how many people played on it since I never did
- Was there a thread with all the alternative menu backgrounds ever used? That one
- That one dummy board that redirected to GitHub's issue tracker, probably
Wishlist:
- There was a thread from me with all my WIP plugins and my other plugin development tools like restarter.gml or the "execute anything when you press a button" plugin
- That one thread with the really good alternate sprites to be used with spriteloader
- My thread with the GG2 Desktop backgrounds, modified from aronhun's original
Do we lose all custom maps ever made if the Mapping board stays hidden? If so then this thread with Depduck's Map Archive: https://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?topic=37692.0 (https://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?topic=37692.0)
Maybe consider taking ownership of the repo / cloning under the Gang-Garrison-2 username so it gets preserved
Thanks GG2Forum, it's been real fun

Memorial of Morons and that Airman post please
-
is he really taking it down because we all said the pewdiepie word tons of times over the course of 15+ years

It has generally been agreed upon that there is not an actual reason to keep the forum public anymore since most of the discussion happens on the Discord.
-
discord pretty much killed almost every forum in existence
what's the point of setting literally everything to private though
-
It was discussed amongst upper staff and generally agreed upon that we should clean up all the bloat, and in the best case scenario, make boards for on-topic discussion pertaining to the game and any future projects that are opened under our banner (if any come to fruition). The alternative would have just been to take the entire forum down instead -- saving discussions is the compromise.

A few pages I've found to be useful have been Derpduck's Server Guide, the Server Sent Plugin FAQ, and as others have mentioned the server-sent and client-side plugin topics. It would be nice if the pages for Derpduck's Server Mod and Randomizer were kept up as well in some form as I don't think they can be easily found elsewhere
-
ig i get it but at least save the memorial of morons at most
thats pretty much the only thread i care about and i know you guys dont want me having a laugh about airman 14 years later
-
Since others have brought up the subject of server-sent and client-side plugins, I will add Derpduck's Server Guide and the Server Sent Plugin FAQ to my list of helpful resources.
-
where tf gems @????
-
forum gems are still mia
-
yeah thats cool man i just want memorial of morons and the summer clan tourney threads back idc that we said the pewdiepie word one too many times growing up over the years
-
ok just memorial of morons is that a fair compromise
-
hi lite uwu
-
I came back to look for something but I guess I'm not gonna find it now because it's in one of those hidden boards rip.
I'll say it in case it means anything to anyone, I was looking for a thread where a guy did art impressions of a bunch of members and for me they did a parody of the goggles guy from the music video for Extra by Ken Ishii since I used to have a gif of that as an avatar.
-
Our posts still exist so idgi either

Or here's a better alternative; maybe pin a few important/noteworthy topics to the top of their respective subforums, and make everything read only. Nobody can post, no indiscriminate scorching of Earth required! You're trying to fix something that isn't broken.

Okay, why? What harm is being done by just leaving it open? The only reason you gave was because leadership has categorization autism or something.
Excuse me for sounding dramatic but this is basically virtual grave desecration; you just made 99.5% of the forms content inaccessible for no reason. I can't think of any reasonable motive behind this besides an arsonist's glee/reveling in the power of destruction. The only reason I'm posting this because I logged on to browse to find all my shit deleted for no reason.
-
hence why i want forum gems back even if it's just for like 1-2 threads
they can just admit it's because we all said no-no words growing up since times were different but i guess they don't want to for some reason
-
Thats cool man!!
-
I agree with @VerticalHorizon and would like to add my own five cents.
- Do you think we should keep the forums running for GG2 related discussions?
I would say that for discussions on specific questions and/or problems - yes, it does. But for general community chatter and shitposting, Discord is actually much better suited. But it quickly fades away as soon as it comes to detailed conversations on complex topics that can be carried on for a long time and to which people has to refer or return from time to time (GitHub too, btw). Development-related conversations are good example. We at doom2d.org also have Discord, IRC, Telegram, and a Matrix-like solution to gateway all of this bi-directionally, but in the very end it turned out to be a mess compared to the forum when it comes to serious talks and decision-making. Beyond that, it's still a history that shows the respectful age of the project and its maturity. Recently a miraculously preserved partial backup of the our old forum was found, and that's why we are going to merge it into ours current - posts there date back right up to 2005!
- Do you think we should also have a board or two for things vaquely related to GG2, like Game Maker development?
It sounds like a good idea, but it's actually not, because there are much better places exist for such communities. Any discussion on the notorious GameMaker here will inevitably relate to GG2 in one way or another.
- Is there any content on the old forums that you think should be saved? Please be as specific as possible.
At the very least:
- Any discussion related to the development. There's simply nothing to negotiate.
- All announcements and news.
- Any content published for the game (maps, plugins, mods, utils, etc).
-
whyd you delete my posts i was right wasnt i
-
so what's the hold up with adding back the threads we've all requested and never really did any harm to this place to begin with
-
how has it taken almost an entire year for you guys to restore it
