This has been a long time in the making. On this day, one year ago, we released Gang Garrison v2.2, so we thought it would be fitting to celebrate this day with the release of the next big update. Today, we bring you Gang Garrison v2.3, the Classy Update!

It has been customary to describe all the changes at this point, but there are so many that, if we put them all in a single list, you would probably die of exhaustion and awe if you tried to read it. So to save you from that horrible fate, we have prepared an update page (http://www.ganggarrison.com/classy) where you can learn about the most important points. Go read it (http://www.ganggarrison.com/classy)!

The new version is available on the front page as usual, and can also be installed with the auto updater. Or you can just grab it from here (http://www.ganggarrison.com/download.php?file=1).

I'd like to thank everyone who made this update possible. Our developers, artists and beta testers, for the amazing ammount of work you contributed, but also you, our community, who continue to play this game and support us after all this time. You are a unique bunch of people. You are Faucet.

Actually we should write a letter to valve and make them give us fancy hats and have a new page on their forum so that new players will come and ask "Will you play with us?" and we'll reply "Nah.mpeg"

Bitching about credits? So I demand a better spot, I mean I made 2 bloody music pieces and 9 major animations.

Other than that, when will the party mode end? Maybe make it togglable by the host, while we're at it.

And advertising, remember we have a tf2 spray? Maybe make a new one or update old one. And post on tf2 blog would give us much attention. On the other hand, remember what happened last time, right?

Next update will make the game as balanced as possible by introducing Cannonballs as the only weapon. And to make it more realistic, your corpse after death will still be able to jump and shoot.
Hell, I'd actually like to play it for a day. Add it as a Medieval's counterpart, "b4 times mode" (see wat I did thar?).

Is there a list of Q/C changes I can look at? I'm not sure of the damage values given by the bar, but I'm okay with what I've been seeing so far. The bubble changes are great.

The rocket jumping physics are a lot cooler. Hope to do some KOTH soon.

We switched to a new DLL for networking so that might have had to do with it but doubtfully

They don't lose damage going through people, and you take higher self-damage than you did in 2.2.

Any lag reduction you notice is probably placebo.  However a lot of code was optimized so if your 'lag' was caused from your processor not keeping up, that would help.

Gonna try my hand at port forwarding, to help with the mass amount of players.

Holy crap, it actually worked!  Although I can't really do anything else besides GG2 or the server lags, it still works!

Yes. Previously, it was 30-90.

The change was to encourage the sniper taking more offensive roles.

Make a bug report on launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/gg2) please and include your Windows version, variant (e.g. Home, Pro) and Service Pack level. Also please check if you have any firewall software or unusual networking software installed. And please check if you can host with the old version. And does this always happen? I'm very interested in this.

no it didnt, the old meter would go down slightly but would reload to full by the time the next one started into infinity, now if you just shoot into air your meter will go to zero

i didnt mean that it didnt lose any bar at all if thats what you thought i meant sorry :I

i only bring this up bc now I lose spy checking without being at a disadvantage

I'm not sure if it's leaking the beta, but I can remember playing a beta version with dominations.
But I'm fine with them not being implemented, at least there's still some teamwork and strategy involved, not just mindless rushing just to kill one certain enemy.

The only stuff that remains in the source is logging it in the kill feed and stat tracking. The rest of the domination code made up like +90% of what was needed. The kill feed addition is really easy once you know what you're doing and stat tracking was piss-easy to do as I was doing it for the other stats.

Maybe I should have put that another way.  Bubbles are a lot more effective as shields now, bunching up where you're aiming to create a thick wall of bubbles, unlike 2.2 where they just kinda floated around you with little control over where they go.

i tested it once, it was approximately the width of the upper bridge thing on orange

so i know at least orange could cause it to go to max range, but that's because it's open space above that

The flamethrower got a complete overhaul. Flames at the base of the stream are ridiculously powerful, while ones at the end aren't. They have falloff. Yes, GG2 has falloff now, even if it's just for a class where it actually makes sense.

Github is a marvelous, publicly-accessible resource.

But an explanation of how it works:
What exactly is the formula for afterburn calculation?
There is no strict formula for it, I'll try to recall as much as I can.

Collision with flames will increase burn duration a fixed amount
Collision with flames will increase burn intensity an amount determined via falloff

Burn duration is straightforward, length of burning.
Burn intensity will stay at a certain value for x frames after contact before diminishing to 0 after another y frames.
Both duration and intensity have caps, they cannot increase infinitely.

If either duration or intensity reach 0, they are both zeroed out.

To find the damage dealt over time, you need to understand calculus in order to integrate the functions (after creating functions, of course)

I'm pretty sure it's a nerf at least when it comes to killing low-HP classes, because the damage doesn't scale up enormously in the first few frames anymore. Having said that, I've been playing it a lot and have been doing pretty well despite the fact that I keep forgetting that the flareblast exists (:z4:), while at the same time the pubbies are finding it a good bit harder to rush in and get easy kills, so overall it's actually turning out to be a good balance for the time being.

We should be able to handle this kind of load better next time - most of the initial problems were because of bad server configuration (we hit the TCP socket limit), and after some tweaking the only problem still happening is that apache processes sometimes croak and take all requests queued to them to nirvana. I'm not sure why this happens, but it was only every 15 minutes or so and I might be able to work around it.

RAM and bandwidth use were in the green the whole time. I'm not sure about CPU because that's a bit hard to measure on a virtual server, but it might have been a bit high. The site was running smoothly though even in the first minutes as far as I can tell, IF you were able to get hold of a connection - so I think CPU wasn't a big issue either. I've sent a query to our hoster to see if we can get them to raise the TCP socket limit.

Edit: I changed the configuration in a way that might work around the "apache suddenly dies" problem... there's no good way to test it though :P

Yes, this wasn't all that unexpected -- I actually would have thought the hit would be bigger. The problem is that we never had a load like this on the "new" server before, and I didn't have any experience with this kind of situation, so I didn't know how the server would react and which knobs would have to be tweaked to ensure everything keeps working smoothly. I'm learning this administratoring as I go along, and now I'm slightly smarter again :smiley16:

It might just be a steady wave of people, as it wasn't really a huge blog update or anything, so there wouldn't be 10,000 people trying to see the blog. Plus it was really subtle among the other crap that they talked about. (They don't really say what Gang Garrisson even is in the short sentence, so people would pass up looking at it.)

Well at least the server didn't tear a hole into another dimension.

I think it's mostly subsided, most of the joins are from the initial posting of the blog (alot of people keep tabs on the blog for updates)

we did get a heavy influx of players/servers and the website did go down a bit, but I don't see that many new members or something, maybe they just didn't bother to post feedback and stuff?

Also, the infiltrator can no longer pick up the intelligence when cloaked, which i do not approve of.

On the bright side, it means a constructor can't cockblock you with his autogun on the intel anymore.

The downside being that mindlessly spyrushing the intel is somewhat harder now.

So, don't do the latter.

Some more updates on the server situation:

Host Europe replied that the only way to increase the socket limit would be if we switched to a bigger server package - which is not an option imo.
I've been looking at different options for limiting the number of sockets we need, but so far I didn't find anything that is both effective and simple.

Then there's the "apache bid farewell, cruel world" issue. Looking at older logs, this apparently happened regularly even on normal days, so one or two people every day have probably seen that ugly nginx 504 error page before now. The added load just caused it to come up more often and affect more requests. It would be neat to find out why it happens, but the workaround seems to be working, so you should only get a few seconds delay now where you would have got an error before.

It's the animation the Demoman does when taunting with the Sticky Launcher in TF2. It's just difficult to show hand signs from a side angle.

If you're going to edit the Demoman's animation, could you also make his left leg look a bit less awkward? It juts out in a weird way.

Well, there's a long story of my laziness and trial&error techniques behind the demoman's animation.

And if you want crazy legs, look closely at medic's left. Can't unsee, but it looks more acceptable than that one, so I won't change it.
I also made new music, if you don't know. No bragging or anything...

Valve devs are paid quite well to do nothing the whole day.
Faucet devs and testers and spriters and coworkers do it for free and release updates only when it's most logical to. Unless you want buggy stuff every two days that not only doesn't improve the gameplay but rises lag and must be purchased each time.

With my shitty connexion, whenever I change a map to a custom one, I see last map background and the game freezes. If I try to "Disconnect", it bugs but if I choose to "Quit Game", no problem.
It's very annoying, and it doesn't happened in 2.2. It makes me sad :(
But I guess problem is from my connexion and computer.

EDIT : Uh, Lemonade has just said that it's an old problem.

I haven't hardcore looked at the animation, but maybe try making his arm point downward? (Like not a lot, less than 10 degrees would probably be enough.)
