Yes, that's right - it's been 10 years now since we first released Gang Garrison 2 for the Bootleg Demakes competition!
The actual release date is a bit tricky to pin down - while the first demo (https://www.ganggarrison.com/oldversions/2008-08-25%20Prerelease.zip) was released on August 25, I'd rather count the September 7 version (https://www.ganggarrison.com/oldversions/2008-09-08%20Original%20Release.zip) which was the actual entrant to the competition. Upon releasing it, I proudly announced: "The game is FINISHED!" Boy, had I known what was coming... However, the version that really introduced GG2 to the world was the "Lobbyfix", released on September 10, exactly 10 years ago today. This was the first version that went viral on /v/ (http://www.geenat.com/-v-%20-%20Video%20Games_1221320676960.png) (thanks to gnat for preserving this historic moment), and it gathered an incredible amount of attention and activity overnight.
Did you know that by now, Team Fortress 2 is only ~10% older than Gang Garrison 2? It's true! Also, Gang Garrison 2 is now over half as old as Half-Life. Are you feeling old yet? :z4:
I would like to thank you all for being such a devoted community and for still sticking around after all this time. When we started out, I never expected anything even close to this. I thought the game would last for two weeks after the competition, but now, a full decade later, people are still playing this game every day (https://www.ganggarrison.com/munin/localdomain/localhost.localdomain/gg2_players_py-week.png), and if you open it at any time of day you're more likely than not to find someone online. And on the development side, while we're not working on it full steam, there is a steady rhythm of activity and a big release every year, thanks to all your great contributions - be it maps, sprites, code or any of the other things that have gone into the game over the years.
Who knows where we'll go in the years to come? While it's true that the game doesn't have as many players as it used to, it's still enourmously popular in the space of free online games. And who knows what fun and interesting projects may keep springing up around it? I'm looking forward to see what we'll do.

Congrats On Surviving That Many Years, to think a game like gg2 would get some success, you'd be thinking right
If not, what wrong with you

It's surreal to be honest. I joined 9 years ago. I kinda can't get over that

stfu and have some respect
but yea. gg2 has a pretty awesome legacy that has started from very humble beginnings. thanks for the years of entertainment you've provided me when tf2 doesn't want to work with me. i've met many amazing and unique people in game and now recently in the community, and it's my honor to say that gg2 will always stay in a special place in my heart whenever the word childhood comes to mind. though i dont think that sitting in front of computer for hours on end and furiously typing in chat whenever someone manages to beat me hard, is a particularly nice nor commendable aspect when it comes to talking excitedly about one's more younger and innocent days.
happy birthday and thank you med0 and the other developers who have supported this awesome demake.

Med0, Chris P. Bacon, mrfredman, and all the people involved in making this game and community what it is are the actual GOATs. it's crazy that this whole thing is still up. i definitely appreciate the time, effort and resources you guys have spent to keep this afloat for so long, knowing that you don't make a penny off of it.
spending as much time as I did on the game and especially the forum fucked me up hard, but I can't help but look back on it all with a smile.
so T H A N K Y O U

Am, I late to the party? Eh. I'm back and kicking it to enjoy my old time favorite!
-
Thank you for your continued support of this game.
I ran a few clans back in the day, I've been in a few, I've played countless hours of this game. It's simplicity and ability to be itself without having every feature in the universe is a testimate to it's amazing community and gameplay. I hope this sees a resugrence in players to a point where things can be quite more enjoyable. But even if we don't get it to that point all those years ago (I think I started playing maybe 8 years ago???) we still have something... I think that says a lot.
By the way, are you folks still taking donations?

Thanks for all the kind words!

Funny enough, there is a small upwards tick in player numbers again since the middle of the year. Maybe people just spend more time playing games in the darker seasons, and we still have fewer players than a year ago, but I think this is the first time I noticed a gradual increase again:

(careful, this is a live image and may look different when you visit here in a couple of months. Also don't mind the big gap in the graph, that's just a glitch caused by the server move - the time between copying the entire system over to the new server and actually switching over from the old server to the new one)
By the way, are you folks still taking donations?
The old paypal donations link should still work, many thanks if you want to contribute. We're only using it to pay for the domain name, since it would run out fairly quickly if we tried to use it for the actual server :)
In case you're wondering, our running costs are about $1 per month for the domain, and $6 for the server since the last move a couple of months ago (which more than halved the costs).

I shot you folks some money. Always wanted to back in-the-day, but it didn't help that I was unnable to be legally employed or have a bank account. Either way, glad I can still support this. I'm really interested in bringing more people and and keeping this going. Let me know if there are more ways I can help.

Oh boy, congratulations to GG2 and community!
Yes, I've just happened to remeber this game and comunity today, and, after years, ended up coming back to take a look on how things are looking like. This game and community were some of my main things to care for, back in 2010, my High School years.
It was the first (and only) game that I've played competitively, as well as the first place where I started uploading my art, on those specific art sub-forums. In fact, exposing my art here was a kick-off to making more, receiving feedback by lots of people IRL, and helping on my decision to apply for a carreer on Industrial Design. I was already a Mech. Engineer student, so I coupled my skills with the technical knowledge. Mind you, as silly as that sounds, it was kind of a inffluence for me.
Long live!

Congrats! :trophy:
I still remember playing the early versions of this game, where everything was imbalanced, the maps were shit and you couldn't climb the stairs because the servers were lagging so much. But it was still fun! And over the years you turned it into an actual decent game!
It's pretty amazing that the game is still alive. :z5:
