Title: Changes to the forum
Post by: mrfredman on June 12, 2009, 12:42:31 am
So we've made a few somewhat major changes to the forum, and I just want to lay them all out so everyone knows what's going on.

First off, we've added Google adsense to Random Chatter. Its a section of the forum that seems to get a lot of traffic and we are hoping to harness some of that to help support ourselves. The donations have been incredibly helpful, but we still have some high costs, and we are looking for alternative sources of revenue. So if you want to helpful and supportive, and are unable to donate, you should totally be clicking on some adds for us.

Secondly, we've added a new section to the forum, the Serious Discussion board. This forum is meant as an alternative to random chatter, where those of us who like to express ourselves in words can converse without being overwhelmed with immaturity and insanity. I suspect that many of our current users will have little use or interest in this board, but I hope to create a space where we can foster some semblance of maturity on this forum.

Lastly, I've begun the process of cleaning up and reorganizing the existing boards, what was once general discussion is now general gang garrison discussion, a place to discuss all things gang garrison (you can also talk about tf2 I suppose, we'll look the other way). I don't think much will have to change, it's just a new name. I'm also consolodating the General Developer Discussion and Game Client boards. I've already moved all the topics I think are important out of the Client board and into Developer Discussion and I'm planning on deleting the entire board in a day or two, but I wanted to give people a chance to speak up if there are threads I missed that should be recovered before the board gets deleted. Please post here if there is a thread that you want moved before I delete the board.

Um, I think that's all for now. I'm totally open to comments and suggestions.

Thoughts?

It would be good to have more intelligent people around

Put a "MEDIC!" bubble chat emoticon on posts.
In related news, I'm gonna mash my keyboard at those ads.

Where are those anyways?

Where are those anyways?

They are supposed to be at the top and bottom of random chatter, but I've already gotten a few reports of people not seeing them. Anyone else not seeing anything new in RC?

This is how my Irc looks like. Is that googl ad ours? Because it's always been there since b1.

Also, how much money do you get per ad visited/clicked?

Roughly one cent or so. I think it depends on how much money the person invested into the google ad though so a extremely popular one might have higher value.

By RC I meant random chatter, we certainly don't have any control over what ads mibbit has.

I don't see any ads in Random Chatter either. Needs fixing?

Gawd, the Gang Garrison Discussion section looks so empty now. Like the time on one other forum I've been on, when Off Topic and Creations Gallery were moved.

'sall good. We cool.

Now I can simply hide that ugly RC. And maybe I'll even check into our poor little Structured And Well-Written Sensible Commentary On Anything In General board, it sounds like a very good idea as long as deliberate troll accounts don't plague it.

Why not make a child board for art-related things so you don't have to go digging through a bunch of threads to find a few sprites?

Not really a bad idea, though there's only so much art to do before we delve into unfunny sprite comics.

Even if there isn't that much art stuff, it will promote future stuff and improve organization.
