Title: Server maintainance on August 9-10
Post by: MedO on August 01, 2011, 02:44:09 pm
Our hoster is informing about a downtime again, and this time it will be rather lengthy:
Quote
Sehr geehrte Kundin, sehr geehrter Kunde,

**

Dear Sir or Madam,

maintenance work is scheduled between 09/August/2011 11:00 PM and 10/August/2011 06:00 AM for the infrastructure of one of our data centers. We will be working on the low-voltage main distribution, which will require the shutdown of parts of the infrastructure to protect the technicians involved.
[...]
We expect a downtime of at least 4 hours within the given time frame. All systems will be shutdown at the beginning of the maintenance window and restarted afterwards.

We want to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the maintenance, which is necessary to ensure the operational reliability.

Thank you for your understanding.

Times are CET. During the downtime, the website, forums, lobby and TF2 server will be unavailable (as will relay 6 of SceneSat Radio - but I doubt you even knew about that). We might be able to run a "fallback" lobby server, which would require a small GG2 update before then.

The same thing we do every night, Dragon.

Considering how every single change is documented, line-by-line. It'll be piss-easy to port over any mods since the changes that he is alluding to are isolated to a small number of the gameserver scripts and the lobby object.

What's the point in having people porting over mods just so that little Billy Mathison can play GG2 within that 4 hour timeframe, he can go ride a fucking bike or some shit, which is something that I'll rather be doing than porting over even my simple-ass mod

Our host schedules downtimes for maintenance. We have to deal with it. We are planning on having a backup so dealing with it in the future is less of a hassle. It may seem annoying to you in the short term, but that's only because you're looking at one isolated downtime instead of the potential downtimes that we may have in the future.

If it takes you 4 hours to port over what could amount to all of 10 lines of code, I feel sad for you.

Post by: SCBG on August 02, 2011, 01:41:12 am
Well if that's the case, fine. I dunno how this shit works, but as long as there's no necessity for mini-updates every time the host undergoes maintenance, I'm fine with it for now.

Also I never said it would take me 4 hours to port, I'm saying it's better for Pubfag McFinnigan to deal with not being able to play GG2 than for all the mods to go obsolete. Unless something's changed from 2.1.3 to 2.3.

Compatibility wouldn't change at all, actually.

The clients and servers would only default to a different lobby server if the main one were to go down. Unupdated servers wouldn't show up in the backup lobby, unupdated clients could not be able to see the backup lobby. They can still connect to servers manually, though.

I get what you're saying, don't see what you're getting at
I'm saying that you technically don't even need to port your mod over because compatibility won't be an issue (although you might want to update the version number or you'll be prompted to update every single time you start up the mod).

So is it possible to host and have someone manually joi n thw server like when the lobby was broke or is this all nultiplayer functionality broke, anyway you can download OHU and play against bots

Only the lobby is down.

You can host and give people your ip, and they'll be able to join.

Oh my, all the rage and just because you're guessing what I plan to do and that it will be a huge problem.

The update I'm talking about would change the LOBBY_SERVER_HOST constant and the version number (so it shows up in the auto updater), nothing else. I want to switch it back to a dyndns hostname so we can point it to a different server when the VS is down.

Seems pointless when there are bots and its only 4 hours, some players will be asleep then (in a difdrent time zone)

Bots are not widespread, they are isolated among a few users. Regular players who don't frequently visit the forums have no idea of this incoming downtime.

Then maybe we should have MedO's minor update come along with a function that shows an announcement regarding this lobby downtime upon launching the game?
It could also have a hyperlink leading to this thread, maybe.

So we make an update that will allow the lobby to keep working, and in this update we inform people that the lobby won't work? Genius!

Any mods made during this time will be backwards compatible anyways, you would just have to join manually, or just wait out a single day

actually an interesting thing to think about: if the server is down the gg2 updater will not be able to update anyways, so anyone attempting to play a few hours after the lobby shuts down, then they won't be able to update at all, though we do have a functional irc channel which can distribute Mediafire links.

Anyways, to be honest it may not be ideal to replace the whole exe for minor updates such as this one which changes what is theoretically dynamic data (though the ip in practicality is stayed constant through due to the dns service)

Do you think that we should in future updates base some data off of a Text file with some minor Constant data that can be easily updated to not interfere mods? Though this really would be the only situation where you'd want to do that, and the fact that setting it to a redirection system actually suffices, other data which doesn't necessarily often change such as sprites and sound effects can remain external to the updater, thoughts?

Probably could have posted that in somehwere else, either way now that I think of it, it might be needlessly making the game source more complex

i dunno, it's late. Going to bed

Make a text file with some options in it that the gg2updater can change without interfering with mods.

Wait.

Will the IRC tab (http://www.ganggarrison.com/irc.html) be open?

Because almost everyone uses it to chat, so if that dies too we can't use it as an information source.

The IRC server is owned by someone else, it's not part of gg2.

The server yes. The online-client no.

Da.

You can just connect through mibbit or any other irc client if you're paranoid.

The tab, no. But you can still use e.g. http://www.esper.net/publicirc.php (http://www.esper.net/publicirc.php)... or just install a normal IRC client.

The night is upon us, and the hour draws near.

Hm, whatever. The lobby is already transferred to my old EeePC once more, where it was running for quite a while in the olden days, before we had the snazzy server and all. I'll switch everything back tomorrow, and hope things remains working until then and the Eee's wireless connection doesn't spontaneously combust. We'll see. Anyway, good night.
