I just received an eMail from our hoster. As always, this concerns website, forum and lobby server.
Dear Sir or Madam,
maintenance work is scheduled for our network on
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012, between 00:00 AM and 06:00 AM
as well as
Thursday, February 9th, 2012, between 00:00 AM and 06:00 AM
[...]
There will be multiple, short interruptions of the network connection which are supposed to be no longer than 30 minutes for each day. Since different components are affected on each date, your are affected of both maintenance windows.
Our infrastructure is to be updated and extended. In the unexpected event of problems during that process, the network could be unavailable for a longer time during the maintenance window.
Only the network is being worked on; your server and its data are not to be changed.
We aim at keeping the downtime as short as possible.
Thank you for your understanding.

God damn. How old is their equipment that they need to update this often?
-
I have no comparison with other hosters, but I'm pretty happy with the job they do, especially since these mysterious high-server-load quarter-hour downtimes appear to have gone away.
-
At least it's only 6 hour intervals. I can live with that
-
Can't we just point the lobby domain to a backup lobby for the duration?
-
Yeah, wasn't there an update for that?
-
I can host a backup lobby on nclabs.org if necessary. Also, are those times German times? If yes, then you americans are screwed :hehe:
-
I don't think moving the lobby is worth the effort for such short downtimes. Also, the lobby is currently tied to ganggarrison.com again because we lost our old dyndns account, if you will remember.

Orpheon get out that one mod you had when something like this happened.

:/
First, we had the game point to ganggarrison.com as a lobby. This worked for some time, until there were several down-times like this one.
Medo then decided to create an in-between server at dyndns or whatever, so that the game would point to it, and it would redirect it to the lobby. This means it's easy to set up a replacement lobby somewhere, and just change the pointer to it at that dyndns server without having to make a gg2 update.
Then, suddenly, the dyndns account disappeared. As soon as Medo found this out, he tried making an update that again pointed to ganggarrison.com, like the old one. Since releasing updates took time, I immediately distributed a small mod that did that, and pointed towards ganggarrison.com.
Now, our problem is the same as the original one. GG2 is tied to ganggarrison.com, and that ganggarrison.com is going offline.
What I can do, if nightcracker hosts the lobby on his server, is make a mod that points to that (even though he can probably do that too :P).

Guys, we are talking about at most 30 minutes per day here if nothing big goes wrong on their side, and even that split up into several short periods.
How about adding a permanent backup lobby? Servers would always fire their registrations to both at once, and clients would first try to connect to the main one at ganggarrison.com. If that is unreachable, they would fall back to the backup.

Yes.
Also, a pretty easy non-solution to this would be to add a history page to the lobby menu.
