ME! i was thinking sth like that too but i don't have enough skill or patient to do that EDIT: that thing you were talking about, did you know how to do it yet?
I have ideas, I have read stuff from people who have done it, I've looked at similar stuff and their source, etc... Short and precise: http://www.ai-junkie.com/ga/intro/gat1.html and following that, http://www.ai-junkie.com/ann/evolved/nnt1.htmlThis here is a very good example of what I dream for: http://www.stellaralchemy.com/lee/vce3d_about.phpThe only thing that's bad is that the individuals only live one at a time, nothing like parastism, hunting, etc... can even exist.

2D would be sooo much easier, but again, I'm wondering about the sight problem....
Read those two top links. They explain pretty clearly the basics of programming an evolving mind, and there's an example that perfectly illustrates what I want to do (Dem tanks).
PS: IRC?

I want to make some kind of evolution simulator someday, where you have creatures that live normally in a world, and they reproduce and feed and kill and hunt and die and mutate and etc..., and watch whether something interesting happens after a few thousand or so generations.
In particular, I want to try out evolving eyes, or more precisely the image-recognition "software" required to use them. Just feed them a steady stream of image input, and watch whether they learn to react to certain things.
I'm wondering whether I should do this in 3d or 2d.... 2d would be easier, and wouldn't have any performance problems when you start having lots of individuals, but creating an image from a 2d perspective is...confusing. Or should each creature see an angel-topdown view on itself?
Would anyone be interested in helping?
They did it already, in some ways. Google sonic adventure 2 battle. There was a mode called chao garden. Each chao was an individual animal with unique characteristics and heritable characteristics and stats. You were able to breed them and genetic variation of these appearances and stats would occur, taking either the father, mother, or a mix of the two for each trait and stat. Thus, you could breed the perfect chao with months of work sexing them individiually.

There, a human consciously selected parents, and had a definite goal in mind: The maximisation of certain stats. Did new things come out of those Chao, or was there only a stat improvement? Did they create certain behaviours themselves? Did they really change their structure and workings over time?

I don't know Dr. Random at all but if you're talking about character design I would suggest some fat guy with an aviator hat, a bandana and a mechanical arm. ...okay I just pulled this out from my nose.

An old man, like the one wearing a fedora in one of his countless avatars, except dressed up like dr. Kleiner from half life. Plus his bald, barely covered by a techno fedora, has a dr Manhattan like pulsating cyan circle. Also he's overweight.

Gengis Garrson with a Terminator-esque face (scarred metal on one side) and a portal gun for that side's arm.

Hmm, might try working on my archer to be more than just a pot farmer.
What a coincidence, I was working with Archer to make him more than just a pot farmer.

Why do I have the urge to make a multiplayer rougelike? I know that I suck at rougelikes and multiplayer coding, and at best it would play like an ASCII Dungeons and Dragons.

What if in a sandbox/other type of game, there was an container you could put things in to evaporate them? And if there's enough moisture in the air (which you could also get by evaporating water), it would create a rainstorm based on the elements you used. So all water would get you a rainstorm Fire, Earth, and Water would get you acidic rain Fire and Water would get you a firestorm Ect.

Okay, so I had the stupidest idea ever today while sitting in Trig.
Time travel. Except you never quite know where/when you're going to end up, so every time you try to fix something you already fucked up to prevent the spacetime dimension falling in on itself there's a 50/50 chance you'll just make it worse and not know until you go forward again.
