It doesn't necessarily have to be the menu. It could be the thing that Psycho is working on, which by the way should be taken into consideration more often. You know, things Psycho is working on.
3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: One thing that I wanted to do was make it so alt-fire would toggle "build mode" 3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: kinda like the infiltrator's cloak 3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: and then just clicking primary fire while in build mode would build/destroy 3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: instead of the shotgun 3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: seems more intuitive that way to me 3:19 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: less accidents What's wrong with making things intuitive, easy to access (both for users and for people who interact with the user), and can act as a failsafe for human error (no one is immune to having a misclick)? Having a control on the numbers doesn't feel natural in a game like GG2 where the only other use for the numbers is for changing class/team or using bubbles, I concede to that. It only feels natural to veteran players because they had become accustomed to that 1 exception by means of the build menu. Character control should be bound to the movement keys, jump, taunt, and the mouse -- anything more is excessive, which is why the implementation that I proposed fits the bill to a tee.

uhh
right clicking would disable you from shooting until you either plant a sentry or exit the menu
I guess it would feel more natural but that would be a nerf of sorts to the engineer, making the plopping down of a sentry in a heated environment more dangerous

because they use scripts to do deal with it anyone who uses the gs, knows the command to build a sentry, and isn't retarded uses a quick build script

people are only accidentally destroying their sentries prematurely because they're used to the old controls. once they change their habits, the lack of a build menu will feel a whole lot better in the long run

of course, that's total opinion and thus i hope you're not using "it will feel better" as the staple of your argument
i kinda think of the build menu like a sentry condom... stopping those premature drops and let's you think twice before you make the decision, know what i mean

I personally, as a engineer veteran, say bring it back. Like intel has said, it gives you a chance to think about it. Yeah, it may feel better in the long run, but to be quite honest, it gives a variable in the gameplay. True, it takes a while to get used to, but destroying your own sentry due to a panick or a misclick is a problem. I don't care if it's an option in game, as long it's official.
Psychopath, while your argument is valid, I personally prize caution in my gameplay. I don't like having to calculate the exact location I want to put my sentry because I can't get some time to do a M2+Number key.

The feature creep argument is fucking retarded, we're an arena shooter, not an enterprise application. Valve has a shitload of competitive TF2 options in vanilla tf2, things that used to have to be done with scripts or skins: disabling crosshair on sniper scoping, automatic reload, fast weapon switch, disabling viewmodels, custom hitsounds when you hit people, ability to turn ON the damage indicator, AND the hitsounds, etc
And you're complaining about feature creep for something similar to disabling the crosshair when you scope in - something that helps people who are good at the game do the related thing easier, but punishes worse players and takes away a small part of the spirit of the game.

It can be both, but I feel like the players who are used to the build menu are hurt the most.
As Tet says, the build menu adds caution and an extra degree of planning/prevention to the mix. It's on standby during heated battles and you don't have to worry about misclicking and dropping a sentry.

I've stated already that I think I'll add a build menu op-
Actually. You know what.
Fuck it.
I've spent too long attached to this community. It's become the centre of my internet life, and I need to detach myself from it. Move on to better things. New horizons.
And I need to stop spending so much time on the computer.
I'm entering Higher now, and I need to shock myself into action. I've spent the past hour simultaneously rushing homework and playing Katawa Shoujo. Which is utterly ridiculous.
Bye, GG2F. Bye, GG2 dev. Bye, GG2 IRC. I won't be back any time soon.
And to everyone, sorry for being an arrogant prick. Oh well.
Goodnight, and goodbye, folks.

Bye. I would like the build menu back, at least as an option.

Haha, Have fun in real life, ajf. And with that we should end the thread, because this issue is truly ridiculous and there aren't any strong arguments for either side. Menu, no menu, option, I don't care!
