how to catch failspy-checkers
The fact that they hold down m1, wasting all of there ammo (ya'know, those stupid pyros who don't understand the concept of "puffing/flaring" and aren't gunspinning everywhere to check for passive invisibility flame)

Well obviously, I've seen spies who don't even know how to stab, it also seems that a lot of spies don't know you can still hear their jumps when invisible..

Best thing to do with failspies is often to just ignore them. I've seen lots of times team vs team fights where one spy failstabs, and the entire enemy team jumps and concentrates fire on that spy, and then gets owned by the spy's team. If you're confident you can avoid the stabs, it's not necessarily dumb to focus the firepower people down first (especially for classes like medic, who should be healing at the first excuse, or heavy who can't move once he decides to kill something, or soldier because two rockets are often more important than a spy).
At least that's my opinion. On the other hand, I have a track record of getting stabbed the whole time, but I tend to blame that on the fact that I play without sound.

The thing that most of my teamates do is to become either or . Then they just spray around the intel like there's no tommorow. They do the same to autoguns too.

Here's a friendly tip: don't camp the intel because if the rest of the team comes (especially if sad team has a healer) you're fucked. Disregard that tip, it depends on the map. For example, ctf_garti is a map which is wonderful to intel camp on. On red team, set up your autogun in the right middle window and just spam bullets towards the left staircase. Your sentry has complete coverages of the upper and lower route, you can't be flanked by spys, and if a heavy medic attempts to climb the stairs you can jump down and attack them from behind. Pressure gets too hot after jumping? Your spawn's 10 pixels away.

Overall camping foster bad habits and overall bad play, regardless of the map. Don't encourage newbies to be static camping retards. Obviously you're a product of this terrible school of thoughts as you consider spamming bullets towards a staircase a valid strategy.

Camping like that is a bad idea on pretty much any map, even the camping example you cited is bad because that sentry location has a giant fucking sign on it that says "please deposit rockets/stickies in my rectum). And defensive heavy is a really bad idea, you can't actually catch up to anyone who gets past you so you're kinda fucked hardcore if they do.

Bad play, in what sense? In 4v4 competitive play, of course it's inefficient, since you don't have to worry about jelloing, spys will avoid spam, and a skilled demos will easily draw you out. However, versus pubs, it's a first order optimal strategy, more than effective enough for his needs. On large servers, like the most frequently visited Soviet Giraffe, it's not an engineer's job to take out pushes anyways, it's to stop jelloers and, if possible, to stall pushes till other teammates can handle them. If an entire team's push is already at your face as an engineer, or you're in a situation like LC points out where rocketmen and demomen have free range of your spot, it really doesn't matter what you do, you and your team have done something wrong and you're probably fucked anyways. Lastly, once again, map by map basis. Ctf_2fort? Good map for a sentry camp. Gen_destroy? Don't even bother.

You get more kills and defend more ground if you camp (re: defend) further out from the intel room. If you stick around in the intel room, you have no room to back up. You're essentially putting yourself against a wall in hopes that bad players will funnel in and die. Of course bad jello players in pub games are going to die to intel camping.
shit nigga, i even wrote my first guide on this like 3 years ago. Bottom line is that intel camping is not a scalable strategy, while actively defending is. Intel camping will beat shit teams and lose to good teams, while active defense can be adapted to both bad and good teams.
