In my state, in 3rd grade you get put in a special group that takes the gifted test if you scored in the 98 or more percentile which means you take a special class once a week. In 6th grade you take a test, if you get good test scores and are a generally good student, which allows you to take Algebra I in 7th grade, so you're a year ahead in math.
