They probably won't directly affect Gengis, but this game has a nifty thing called "story progression". As time moves on, other people in the neighborhood may get married, have a divorce, have children, get jobs, get promotions, make friends, make enemies, or eventually die. A grim reminder that underneath the surface we're all slowly decomposing meat bags.
From my experience story progression does nothing and all my town sims just became old and grumpy Works fine for me. Make them always wear mimemakeup and be fat.
