They were paying mothers $10,000 to volunteer to have artificial sperm injected into their ovaries, and Punky's mother opted for the program, since she was asexual. The baby was born a week early, and it seems that a chromosome or two was missing from the majority of the artificial sperm. This is how Punky was born.
