No, you can ferment it with a brown mushroom and sugar. The fermented spider eye will probably be used to make the 'thick potion' (4min of slower mining, but instant hp)

Anyone know how to tell the difference between natural obsidian and man-made obsidian? I found a cave and there's no torches or anything, but there's a bunch of obsidian and like 3 cobblestone.

There is no difference.
Natural obsidian is made from lava source blocks and water meeting.
Cobblestone is made from lava flows and water meeting.
You can man-make in the same way.
