EDIT: I finally got this game working, and it is fun as balls. In a good way. Only downside is, literally nobody plays it. I was greeted by a field of sad, dead uninhabited servers. It broke my heart.
To play, you need a copy of Quake, the Team Fortress mod (**2.8** is the latest release, but many groups such as Pwndora play **2.5**), Darkplaces, and TFiguration (which isn't necessary but is very useful for binding all the special keys).

If anyone wants to play, let me know.

So, I have a copy of the original Quake, and today I decided to try out the original quake Team Fortress mod. After downloading the 2.8 release (which required several failed googling attempts thanks to the files no longer being hosted on filefront), I unzipped it and put the "fortress" folder in my quake folder. However, there's no executable files in the "fortress" folder, and whenever I run Quake it just comes up all normal vanilla without the team fortress mod. This is really pissing me off, actually. Playing a popular mod for Quake shouldn't be that hard after 15 fuckin' years.
So could anybody help me out with this?

You could always just download a completely legal freeware copy of it that is completely legal in every way.

On the contrary, there's actually a moderately decent amount of tfc players.

Also anybody that had ever played it can discuss it here.
You own the game, right? Just get the Darkplaces renderer which besides offering graphical improvements, bugfixes, and the option to turn said benefits off, also has a build-in mod picker so you don't have to struggle to come to grips with command line parameters.

Edit: Old sniper had OP rifle of death and old minigun was actually closer to the TF2 functionality than the TFC version. Also scootbeams of hax and spy can either cloak or disguise, not both. (Cloaking is all that works in SP so yeah, I have it enabled.)

Think of how many TF2 players would rage into the abyss at TF.

Also most glorious intro ever, should have been remade for TF2

Well, if nobody plays it, then I'm not going to take the time to install anything else just to be greeted by empty servers.
What a shame, I'm really into old fps.

Also if you have Quake getting some alternate renderer is probably a good idea as the original has waaay too many issues for my liking.

Although I wish Darkplaces used the old underwater effect, it was top notch.
