The issue is finding newbies interested in playing. Most players either join the forum and stay for the long haul or simply stay as pubs, not too many people in the sweet spot of kind-of-new-but-active-enough-to-find-the-tournament for us to reach out to.
That being said, if we can find a group, I'd be all for it.

If you'll pardon me for jumping into the thread so late, what about an ingame announcement when you start up, like what TF2 does? Something that looks like the update popups and it tells you about upcoming tournaments? That would certainly make things more "official" and would ensure that, as long as people are playing GG2, they'll know about the tournaments. It might even generate more members for the forum, and it doesn't sound to me like something that would take much effort to code. Thoughts?

I'd support it, we did the same thing to drum up support for the haxxy, which led to the creation of a god deal of good content. I'd support it happening again.

Wasn't the majority done by forumers anyways?

Yep. So would this tournament, if it happened. That's to be expected at this point, we'd be lucky if we'd get even a one or two pub turnover.
The community, both forum and game, isn't much larger than 80 or so active people at this point. The average forumer count online each day is about 40 according to the stats section, and there are usually between 10 and 40 people pubs playing at any point in time.

I suspect that's mostly due to a lack of servers to accomodate a larger playerbase, rather than a lack of people wanting to play. Yeah, it's a small community, I'm not arguing against that, I'm just suggesting that maybe it's because of a lack of servers do we see so few people playing.

We just had a 5v5 pug that was as exciting as any tournament match from 2010-2011. The player skill of those who do play makes up for the lack of active members.

Best Player for each class 2012 I dunno. just always been curious.
A bunch of 1v1s elimination style.
Same class vs same class, so scouts vs scouts, demos vs demos, etc.

1v1 doesn't prove you're better then someone, it only shows you're good at spamming

A 1v1 would be terrible way to judge class skill, ecspecially for support classes like medic and engineer.
Being a good at a class requires a variety of skills that won't come up by fighting your doppledanger.

Definitely, medic vs. medic would not only be terrible at judging who's the better medic, but it would also take so long and would be so boring to participate in that it would be pointless. Spy would also be a terrible class for it for the same reason, the length of time it would take to win. Unless both players didn't cloak, but then it wouldn't be a test of who's the better spy, just who's the better shot, or the most lucky shot. About the only classes I can think of that 1v1 can determine at least some of the player's skill (and would be fun to participate in) is demo vs. demo, or scout vs. scout.
