The speed of the stabs is fine. Besides, we'd have to resprite the animations if we sped them up. Er, if we want them to be fluid, anyway.

Lowering the speed of stabs would take a lot of particular frustration out of the game, on both sides, and move it to being a more tactical tool than a spam one.

but even with the lowered stab times, there's still a fair amount of prediction, and doesn't make it much more appealing to er... not spam

I think you're either talking about a different kind of spam, or spy's other weapon. You can't spam stabs unless you're on a crowded control point where people are too busy fighting other stuff to notice you.

But even then you're lucky they were focused on something else and not you.

Trog, until you understand that the average player doesn't spycheck all the time because there are nine other classes that can kill him much faster, you will not understand the effectiveness of stabspam.

It lasts for like 3 frames before self-destructing. I doubt altering how brief it lasts will have a significant impact on gameplay.

What happens when they're firing backward, which is where 'backstabs' happen. Passive invisibility, right? A mechanic lag can't defeat.
Since the stab's hitbox is so grotesquely large, what happens when someone accidentally runs too close to avoid the stab?
