Maybe if future alternate weapons are planned, a downside could be "no automatic reload" and you would have to reload youself by keeping R pressed. That would be a good gimmick.

Then all you have to do is remember to reload and then it becomes a staight upgrade.

Nah, because by holding R you should reload at the same speed or slower as autoreload would do it gets easily forgeted if you are in the middle of a battle (besides keeping R pressed while firing and avoiding projectiles). It's situational and would balance a powerful, rapid-fire ala Flamethrower, weapon.

Lemonade, if it goes at the same or slower speed, then it wouldn't do anything to the minigun or flamethrower.
