Today, my dad bought a computer from work for 25$. The specs are: Intel(R)Cleron(R) CPU 2.40 GHz 1GB of RAM 80Gigs or memory I'm installing updates and a security program at the moment. The computer is about 7 years old. Did we get ripped off?

You won't be playing games on that piece of shit any time soon, but for $25 I say you got a good deal.

It's not intended for playing games anyway; we're refitting it for general usage.

Quick question, say in 2 years time I'll want to change my GPU, what do I need to check to be sure it's compatible?

i don't see where the problem is if you just use a single gpu.
if you want crossfire or sli, then you need to check if your mobo if it can do that.
oh there is also the possibility of you having a 20 year old pc or something and you currently have a PCI gpu. almost every gpu of this century uses PCIE, infact I don't een have a PCI slot on my mobo. So yeah, you should have a free PCIE slot or you can't do shit with your gpu.
and then you want to check if your PSU has enough power and cables to power your GPU. I think 450-550 watt should be more than enough to power a single gpu. most of the time newer gpus need 2 caples which are either 6pin, or 8pin. or 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin. the 8 pin cables look just like the 6 pin cables, except they look like someone glued 2 extra pins to the side of it.
