Don't use the line tool. use the pencil tool at 100% hardness at a 1px diameter.
Lines for lines and pencil for everything else
You can create any line you want with the pencil tool. Just click one spot, hold shift and click the end point of your desired line. It will connect the dots.

what's a good pixel dimension for a paper sized canvas? photoshop default is too big to use pictures from the interwebs

How did you not know that?
How did you know then? I rarely open help for anything at all, and I've never bothered to hold shift randomly while working

Not in XP's MS Paint. :S Sadly. And that's why I had to abandon MS Paint and use Photoshop but in my own way.

When people say "paint" do they mean Microsoft paint or Paint.net? There is a difference.
