Actually, in some games you can avoid a blue shell if you speed up at the exact moment it hits the ground. It's almost impossible with mini turbos, but it's quite a viable move with mushrooms. The only problem is actually finding one when you're in first place.

I saw it in gif, so therefore it must work.

Oddly enough I was getting single mushrooms while I was in first last night, so for future reference to anyone: Shyguy Standard Kart Wooden Wheels Flower Glider I think it's a pretty dandy setup if you ask me. I dunno if it'll help you since you unlock parts at random but all I know is with that setup I was getting Mushrooms maybe every 1/10 items?Meower, slayer of theories. |

The position is the only thing that matters in item retrieval, at least up until the wii game. Mushrooms can be obtained when in first place, but they're pretty rare.
