The thing with the 3DS though is that you can keep changing the date to get more, so he could just reset it every 1000 steps and max out at 300 coins without having to take 30,000 steps.

Except there's not a lot to do with play coins. At least as far as I know, just the Find Mii thingy, the puzzle thingy, and the note taking stationary thingy.
