I think it's time to have a discussion about the world filter.

As I said last night, I believe that we will be instituting the word filter for the long run but we are open to input as to how it will function and what words will be censored. This is a measure to try and make the forum look a bit more civilized to new players and people casually browsing the forum. From an outward perspective, the social parts of this forum can seem rather hostile and we are hoping to tone that down. We have come to realize that without enforceable measures, the general behavior of people in this forum is never gonna change, so we aren't left with very many options. We are tying to accomplish our goals in a gentle manner that won't infringe too much on your ability to be terrible to eachother as well as creating a system that doesn't require us to ban a significant portion of our population or demand constant observation.

I know that your ability to swear and behave maliciously towards eachother is very important to you, and we recognize that you will likely do everything you can to circumvent these measures and continue to behave reprehensibly. If using degrading language is that important to you, I'm sure you will continue to do it, but without karma it will certainly impune your credibility in the eyes of myself and others as well as making it very clear who is regularly causing problems in the long run.

Essentially we are giving you a chance to swear openly without consequence, it will just be camouflaged from the general public. Everyone on the forum will know exactly what you mean when you call someone a unicorn, but it won't be so abrasive to those who aren't already familiar with the culture of our forums.

Some have said our choice of word censorship is hypocritical as we don't censor less targeted slurs, but if you want we can begin to include those as well. We are willing to have some fun with this and work together to come up with suitable replacements or additions. Personally I'm a fan of ponys, unicorns, and puppys, but if people have other humorous suggestions we are very willing to take them into consideration and change things up.

Let's keep this conversation civil, I'm willing to consider people's complaints and suggestions, but know that the maturity and civility with which you present your arguments is directly proportional to how much weight and consideration we give them.
