I change my position from neutral to pro-karma because I think that all karma really needs is a touch-up to fix some of the flaws of the system. Case in point: I have an idea.
I don't know if any of you will agree, but I'll post it anyway...
...what if we moved the [applaud] and [smite] functions from above the avatar onto the posts themselves? In addition to that, put some sort of counter that'll keep track of how many +1s and -1s a post got, so at least then you'll know from what post you got applauded/smited?
Also, when you press the applaud/smite button, maybe we should require for you to give a reason for your action, like "logical point", "troll post", or "very useful"?
I got a feeling that I will like this idea. It'll be much like many rep system (except IPMart's), except that it won't that the "rep point" limit. Right? Somewhat. Also, we should prevent people from applauding/smiting the same post twice within the same day.

But, if it does, here's how it should work: You're given points based on reputation received, posts made and, in somce cases, every 24 hours. These points can be used to show your appreciation for good posts, by clicking in "REP" right next to the mini-profile's PM. Once you click it, a drop-down "window" will pop up with an "I like" checked and a reason field for you to fill with your own words. The receiver of the reputation will gain a point to spend as well (thus allowing REP exchange) and can see who liked their posts by looking a small bar under the said posts. However no one can give rep to the same post twice.

No, you can, but you still need to obtain a point by doing one of the following: 1) Posting (in some forums, X posts = 1 point. I'd say 10 posts for one point would suit better here) 2) Receiving REP in a post (each time you receive a REP, you get one point. Multiple users can rep one post) 3) Waiting for a time period (the minimum I have seen, I think, was 24 hours)

Time periods don't mean shit.
Other than that, it seems like a great idea.

Newbies don't really post that much at first, anyway. At least the ones I've seen...

Guys, with the number of alt acounts that float through this place a "rep" system wouldn't work, it'd just give people more reason to abuse it. There is NO REASON to have a karma system at all.

What if we limited the amount of accounts there can be on an IP?
If that's possible.

It appears to me that your arguments are built on the somewhat shaky foundation of you being smited a whole bunch of times, which makes me wary of your opinion.

If there's so much controversy regarding this issue, I think it's apparent that at least something is wrong with the system.

I've never liked the karma system to start with, what purpose does it serve other then give the ability to anonamously be a dick? I mean, in all honesty, how often do you actually give a reason behind a smite? Rarely does anyone actually helpfully say "Hey, cut down on the smileys and use proper grammar," instead they just copy paste the applaud code, walk out on their merry way, and leave some poor newb wondering how he got negative numbers below his name.

Which is why part of my suggestion is to put a reason why you've applauded/smited
