The pit barely even is used, it's really just a cool feature on an awesome map. There's the threat of dying but it's real hard to be killed or get killed unless tooooons of lag or really good set up. It really makes the bottom route fights more interesting imo.

Do you remember koth_moonshine?

My sentiments, make it impossible to fall into the pit if you are lagging in a single direction, ie the terrain allows you to walk across it but not fall, the only way to die is to be knocked into it or a misplaced jump.

Here's one of the first versions of the map. However it had quite a few issues, e.g. it was too cramped and spamming rockets towards the point was way too effective.
