In the first movie, Wonka 'loved' the children and gladly invited him into his quirky, fun factory where he gave them all candy and let them run around in his 'candyland' while treating them like his kids every time he got the chance.

In the latest, It's obvious that Wonka dislikes the children tremendously and he's an antisocial, strange guy that doesn't even try to get to know any of the kids, and refers to them strictly as 'little boy' and 'little girl'. He's creepy as hell, but he doesn't like the kids at all.

But that's just my opinion.
