People have always been idiots. Chat simply became more widespread -- the more people using it, the more likely it is to be abused.

Chat as I've witnessed for the most part truly brings out the idiocy in the ones who use it. There're a few tolerable ones, but most of the time it is just 12 year old mentality being 12 year old mentality.

Chat is staple in clan wars, maybe scheduled matches/tournaments and things like that..

Why even have it there? If anything that's when it should be played as it was meant to be.

because inevitably teams will be using skype/irc/steam/others to chat to each other, that is the point of being competitive - playing to win, if there are no rules/laws/proofs of the other team doing so, its totally legit. even spyhacks are legit as long as the person using it doesn't make it blatantly obvious, because you'd never know otherwise.

"scout up top"
"go for the backcap"

Comp is where people actually use chat for what it was originally intended for. It's a useful tool that's wrongly used in pub servers, but there's no problem with it in comp matches.

Or at least there shouldn't be.

Said some pretty controversial stuff there, so I'll go for it and disagree on the point that using "game-breaking" stuff like spyhax is legit in competitive matches. Most tournies ban use of mods, so it'd be instant disqualification to do so. And in clan wars, it's pretty much known you shouldn't suck so much you have to cheat to win against the other (read: TG vs. AF and the minimap controversy)

Chat however, is pretty much super-important in ANY competitive game as long as it's used in a minimalistic manner. This isn't counting teamchat, which could be popping up every 5 seconds to relay strategies, which I find acceptable.

Chat in public games is pretty stupid. It easily derails into stupid, insipid shit and detracts from the playing experience. "BAWWW TYPEKILLS" and "Hey lmao you have a big penis" are my key problems with it. We need chat to be exclusive to wars. I say integrate chat into a special tourney mod with a modified UUID that only war participants have privvy to, and let public servers keep everything else (like RCON.) Frequent changes to prevent leaks would be cool.

there is no way you can prove someone is or isn't using a mod. if said perpetrator of that rule is aware there is no serious insight or some scan device that syncs up the clients and checks for abnormalities, they're free to mod their hearts out. relying on honesty in competition is way flawed.

to those who have / know how to spyhack, it probably wouldn't be very difficult/different to dig into the vinmod source and do whatever it is you do to make a spyhack from the vinmod client. you cannot prove they can see spies, only speculate.

I'd disagree on the fact that there is no way to tell somebody is modding for the major things, especially bots which leave many telltale signs that they are just that, bots. spyhacks is a little harder, if not impossible to prove but if there is enough reason to believe that somebody is using a mod it's up the opposing team to drop out and refuse to play on that basis.

This is the exact reason why I enforced an independent client be used for the recent tournament. It is literally impossible to cheat with that. The only person who even could do so was myself but that was because I wrote it.

Even if someone asked for the source (which I'm obligated to provide under the GPL), I had modified the UUID after I compiled it and before I saved it: there is literally no way for anyone to cheat once the tourney mod was distributed.

Not that it has anything really to do with the client you're mentioning, but is it a bother to change the UUID frequently? And is it a good idea?

GM8 decomiler will be out soon enough that it won't work for very long.

It's a nuisance for those participating because they are required to keep up to date with the correct UUID.

Not to mention the GM8 decompiler pretty much compromises everything.

What could happen is that right before the match everyone downloads a new client that has its own UUID and everyone is expected to join immediately or they are disqualified by default. That's the only thing that I could think of to circumvent that possibility.
